SERVICE CAMPAIGN BULLETIN

Reference Number(s): SI B37 03 14, Date of Issue:  February 2015
BMW: F15 (X5)
GROUP: Special Suspension Systems

This Service Information bulletin supersedes SI 37 03 14 dated February 2015.

Changes made to the B370314 attachment.

PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES BEFORE CUSTOMER DELIVERY OR THE NEXT TIME THEY ARE IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS.

SUBJECT

Service Action: Program Variable Damper Control (VDC) unit

SITUATION

This Service Action is being released to improve customer satisfaction as we strive to be number 1 in the JD Power Initial Quality Survey (IQS). This new VDC software improves the acceleration sensor accuracy in our vehicles, and it helps us to ensure superior product quality. Please implement the VDC Programming Service Action immediately.

This Service Action will be in effect until March 2015. Thank you for your continuous support.

Unfavorable tolerances for the wheel acceleration sensors' plug-in connections may result in deactivation and fault code memory entries and the VDC. If the VDC control unit identifies an implausable value from one of the wheel acceleration sensors, the VDC will be deactivated and the driver is informed by a Check Control message. The vehicle then defaults to the conventional suspension.

AFFECTED VEHICLES

This Service Action involves F15 vehicles produced from August 1, 2014  to November 19, 2014.

First check if a Service Action label with a code number 726  is already attached to the B-pillar.

If a code number 726  has been punched out, the Campaign has already been performed and no further action is necessary.

Vehicles which require this Service Action to be completed will show it as "Open" when checked either in the "Service Menu" of DCSnet (Dealer Communication System) or with the Key Reader.

PROCEDURE

Perform the vehicle test and read the VDC fault code memory. If any of the relevant VDC fault codes are present:

  1. Fault codes stored for the front axle:
    1. 482940 - Wheel acceleration sensor - front left - sensor 1 - value - above threshold, and/or
    2. 482941 - Wheel acceleration sensor - front left - sensor 1 - value - below threshold, and/or
    3. 482943 - Wheel acceleration sensor - front left - sensor 1 - value - implausible, and/or
    4. 482944 - Wheel acceleration sensor - front right - sensor 2 - value - above threshold, and/or
    5. 482945 - Wheel acceleration sensor - front right - sensor 2 - value - below threshold, and/or
    6. 482947 - Wheel acceleration sensor - front right - sensor 2 - value - implausible,

    Or,

Fault codes stored for the rear axle:

    1. 482948 - Wheel acceleration sensor - rear left - sensor 3 - value - above threshold, and/or
    2. 482949 - Wheel acceleration sensor - rear left - sensor 3 - value - below threshold, and/or
    3. 48294B - Wheel acceleration sensor - rear left - sensor 3 - value - implausible, and/or
    4. 48294C - Wheel acceleration sensor - rear right - sensor 4 - value - above threshold, and/or
    5. 48294D - Wheel acceleration sensor - rear right - sensor 4 - value - below threshold, and/or
    6. 48294F - Wheel acceleration sensor - rear right - sensor 4 - value - implausible,

    Then:

Submit a regular PuMA case titled "F15 VDC Sensor Faults Action" for further instructions.

  2. In case NO fault codes are stored in the VDC unit:

Program and code the entire vehicle using the latest version ISTA/P (2.54.1 or 3.54.1).

    Target integration level: F025-14-11-502.

Note that ISTA/P will automatically reprogram and code all programmable control modules that do not have the latest software. For information on programming and coding with ISTA/P, refer to CenterNet/Aftersales Portal/Service/Workshop Technology/Vehicle Programming.

    Always connect a BMW approved battery charger/power supply (SI B 04 23 10  ).

LABEL INSTRUCTIONS

G09820267

This Service Action has been assigned code number 726  . After the vehicle has been checked and/or corrected, obtain a label (SD 92-464) and:

  1. Emboss your BMW center warranty number in the middle of the label (1);
  2. Punch out code number 726  (2), printed on the label; and
  3. Affix the label to the B-pillar as shown.

If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.

WARRANTY INFORMATION

Reimbursement for this Service Action will be via normal claim entry utilizing the following information:

Defect Code:  00 37 17 01 00
Labor Operation: Labor Allowance: Description:
00 62 862 Refer to KSD2 Read the fault code memory and program the vehicle (includes connecting an approved battery charger/power supply and performing a vehicle test)
Or:
00 62 863 Refer to KSD2 Read the fault code memory, replace both wheel acceleration sensors on the front axle and program the vehicle (includes connecting an approved battery charger/power supply and performing a vehicle test)
Or:
00 62 864 Refer to KSD2 Read the fault code memory, replace all wheel acceleration sensors and program the vehicle (includes connecting an approved battery charger/power supply and performing a vehicle test)

The labor operation codes listed above are Plus labor operations.

Refer to KSD2 for the corresponding flat rate unit (FRU) allowance. Enter the Chassis Number, which consists of the last 7 digits of the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). Click on the "Search" button, and then enter the applicable flat rate labor operation in the FR code field.

If a vehicle control module or component was working properly and/or had no related faults stored prior to vehicle programming and it fails to program correctly and/or requires initialization, this additional work must be claimed with separate labor operations under the defect code listed above; refer to KSD2.

Repairs to address control modules and/or components with pre-existing conditions are not eligible to be claimed under the defect code listed in this bulletin.
