Crankshaft sensor (Ver.2): Notes

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 7 other vehicles, including the 2017 BMW X3, 2016 BMW X3, 2015 BMW X3, 2014 BMW X3, and 2013 BMW X3. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

The crankshaft sensor is attached to the gearbox case.

The crankshaft sensor records the position of the crankshaft with the aid of a sensor wheel screwed to the flywheel. The engine control uses this to calculate the engine speed. The crankshaft sensor and camshaft sensor are necessary for the fully sequential fuel injection (fuel injection takes place individually for each cylinder at the specific ignition point).

The signal from the crankshaft sensor means that the engine control also evaluates the crankshaft acceleration. The crankshaft acceleration provides an indication of the combustion quality of individual cylinders.
