SERVICE INFORMATION

This Service Information bulletin supersedes SI 34 02 13 dated November 2013.

SUBJECT

Incorrect Remaining Service Life from CBS Data for Brake Pads

SITUATION

The yellow "Service Due" warning message lights up in the instrument cluster, even though the brake pad thickness is more than 4.2mm (above the thickness at which the pad sensor intervenes). The calculated remaining service life for the brake pads (front and/or rear axle) from the CBS data does not match the actual brake pad thickness.

CAUSE

Software calculation of the brake pad wear model in the DSC.

CORRECTION

Run vehicle diagnostics with ISTA/D and work through the corresponding test modules.

If there are no faults found (this must be resolved first), update the vehicle software using ISTA/P 2.50.2 or a more recent version.

Programming must be started under the conversion menu item "Brake pad correction CBS conversion."

After programming, the vehicle CBS data must be corrected as follows:

Using ISTA, perform vehicle CBS data correction.

In the diagnostic menu item "Front/rear brake", select "Reset forecast to 50,000km" and then reset the forecast distance.

Check the remaining brake pad thickness using special tool 34 1 260.

In the diagnostic menu item "Front/rear brake", select "Set availability, enter the brake pad thickness" and enter the pad thickness measured in mm.

NOTE: If the service counter increases after entering the actual brake pad thickness, the brake pad thickness must be entered once again. The service counter is now reset to the original value.

WARRANTY INFORMATION

Covered under the terms of the BMW New Vehicle/SAV Limited Warranty or the BMW Certified Pre-Owned Program.

Defect Code:  62 13 90 18 00
Labor Operation: Labor Allowance: Description:
00 61 073 Refer to KSD2 Vehicles with the correct integration level or higher. Check brake pad thickness and perform Service Function - pad correction procedure (includes charging the battery)
or
00 61 074 Refer to KSD2 Programming/encoding control unit(s). Checking brake pad thickness and perform Service Function - pad correction procedure (includes Vehicle test and charging the battery)

Labor operation codes above are Main labor operation. If you are using a Main labor code for another repair, use the appropriate Plus code labor operation below.

Plus Work (Vehicle Already In The Workshop)

Labor Operation: Labor Allowance: Description:
00 61 742 Refer to KSD2 Vehicles with the correct integration level or higher. Check brake pad thickness and perform Service Function - pad correction procedure (includes charging the battery)
or
00 61 743 Refer to KSD2 Programming/encoding control unit(s). Checking brake pad thickness and perform Service Function - pad correction procedure (includes Vehicle test and charging the battery)

Refer to KSD2 for the corresponding flat rate unit (FRU) allowance. Enter the Chassis Number, which consists of the last 7 digits of the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). Click on the "Search" button, and then enter the applicable flat rate labor operation in the FR code field.

If control module(s) fail to reprogram or initializations are required, the additional work must be claimed using separate labor operations found in KSD2 under the defect code listed above.

Other Repairs

If performing other ISTA diagnostics and related test plans results in eligible and covered work, claim this work with the applicable defect code and labor operations listed in KSD2.

Brake Pad Replacement (Less Than 4.0 mm Of Brake Pad Material Remaining)

Covered under the terms of the BMW Maintenance Program only.

When brake pad replacement is required (front and/or rear), when eligible, claim the brake pad replacement under the BMW Maintenance Program (defect codes and labor operations including the Standard Scope and performing a CBS reset).
