System check, fuel tank: Notes
The tank ventilation system prevents HC from escaping from the fuel tank into the environment. This is necessary to comply with legal stipulations regarding the pollutant emissions and to prevent a fuel smell.
The development of HC in the fuel tank depends on elements including the following:
- Fuel temperature and ambient temperature
- Air pressure
- Fill level in the fuel tank
- Movement within the fuel tank (e.g. during dynamic driving)
- Time
The fuel tank is bled towards the ambient air via a carbon canister. The fuel vapors that escape here are collected by the carbon canister.
