54 37... Align basic gauge: Notes
WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 11 other vehicles, including the 2016 BMW 435i xDrive, 2016 BMW 435i, 2016 BMW 428i xDrive, 2016 BMW 428i, and 2015 BMW 435i xDrive. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
Special tools required :
IMPORTANT:
Always install and remove the basic gauge with 2 helpers.
To prevent damaging the basic gauge, set the gauge down only in the transportation crate or on the vehicle side panel.
The basic gauge is a highly sensitive measuring instrument which reacts with distortion, even to light impacts.
The basic gauge must be checked for dimensional accuracy on a master gauge after being subjected to impact or dropped.

The basic gauge specifies the basic setting on the X, Y and Z axis.
The basic gauge is essential for the following job items:
- Calibrating the coupling lock
- Calibrating the roof module console
Lift out cover (1) on left base plate.
Installation note :
Cover (1) for base plate must be replaced after each removal.
IMPORTANT:
The outermost left bore hole in the base plate is the reference point for the following operations.
Special tool 54 0 120 must be equipped with correct plastic block (1).
Plastic block without labelling only matches E93.
Plastic block with labelling 2 360 046 B only matches F33/F83.
Remount PLASTIC BLOCK (1), if necessary.
Basic gauge :
NOTE:
Use only special tool 00 9 461
to screw the gauge.
Carefully mount special tool 54 0 121 (cross member) on side panel.
Connect special tool 54 0 122 (arm for x-axis spacing) to cross member and left cowl panel base plate.

Connect special tool 54 0 122 (arm for x-axis spacing) to cross member and left cowl panel base plate.
IMPORTANT:
Insert guide pin of arm 54 0 122 into extreme left hole of base plates.
Connect special tool 54 0 123 (right arm) to cross member and arm 54 0 122.
Observe tightening sequence:
Connect special tool 54 0 123 (right arm) to cross member and arm 54 0 122.
Observe tightening sequence:
- Tighten rear screws on basic gauge to 2 Nm.
- Tighten screw connecting arms to 2 Nm.
Check basic gauge is contacting at all four contact points.
NOTE:
Owing to the body tolerances, there may be a gap on one side between the arm and body.
Do not exert any pressure on the arms!
Do not exert any pressure on the arms!
Center the basic gauge to the body along the Y axis
IMPORTANT:
Adjustment work should be carried out by one person
only.
Adjust the plastic block (1) against the body by turning knurled screw (2) to the outside.
Adjust the knurled screws (2) without applying force.
Set an identical value on the scale on both sides (this value may differ from vehicle to vehicle because of the body tolerances). Signs (+ or -) must be identical on both sides.
The basic gauge must lie on the inner side panel without any play, remove sealing tape (3), if required.
