SUBJECT
CBS Service Maintenance Substitute Checklists
SITUATION
Occasionally, the Key Reader or Service Advisory Module (SAM) application is inoperative. In these situations, the customized Service Maintenance Checklist printout generated by SAM is not available to print for vehicles with Condition Based Service (CBS). For more information on CBS, please refer to SI B00 07 02 .
CORRECTION
Service Maintenance Substitute Checklists have been developed for BMW automobiles that utilize CBS. In case the Key Reader or SAM is inoperative, the appropriate Checklist must be utilized to document any service performed to the vehicle .
| Checklist | Applies to Model | Model Years | Comments |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | 1 Series (E82, E88) and 3 Series (E90, E91, E92, E93) | from 2006 | CBS instrument cluster display intervals for spark plugs and microfilter discontinued as of 2008 models. Includes all M3 versions as well as the 2009 335d. |
| B | 5, 6 Series (E6x) | from 2004 | Replaces the printed form SD92-261 which is discontinued. CBS instrument cluster display intervals for spark plugs and microfilter discontinued as of 2008 models. |
| C | 7 Series (E65, E66) | 2002 - 2008 | Replaces the printed form SD92-191 which is discontinued. |
When completed, the Service Maintenance Substitute Checklist must be signed by an authorized center Service Department Representative and filed in the vehicle's history folder at the center. The customer should also receive a signed copy of the completed Checklist.
In addition, the Evidence of Maintenance Work section of the Service and Warranty Information booklet must be completed. This booklet stays with the vehicle for the customer's record.

PROCEDURE FOR USING THE SERVICE MAINTENANCE SUBSTITUTE CHECKLIST
A. SERVICE ADVISOR
- Download and print out the applicable Checklist.
- Take the Checklist to the vehicle during the service check-in and repair order write-up process.
- Complete the information in the upper section: Customer Name, Chassis Number, Model, Mileage, Repair Order (RO) number, Service Advisor name, and Date.
- Access the "Due-in" mileage and/or month/year information for each serviceable item, using the vehicle's CBS display by following the "Procedure to View Service Items in the Instrument Cluster" below.
On vehicles with iDrive, these items can also be viewed on the instrument panel's Control Display by pressing and rotating the controller to "Vehicle Information", "Vehicle Status", "Service Requirements"; and then selecting each service item.
- Determine which service items are either:
- Recommended (R),
- Due (D),
- Overdue (OD), or have
- No status (not due) - (ND).
Then write the applicable letters into Column (B) next to the corresponding service item in Column (C) of the Checklist.
- Make this Checklist available to the Service Technician.
B. SERVICE TECHNICIAN
- Perform the service on items listed in Column (C) only when the corresponding Column (B) is noted "R", "D" or "OD".
- Sign the Checklist at the bottom after completing each of the required service items.
- Reset the CBS using either the Instrument Cluster (refer to the procedure below), DISplus/GT1 or 3G equipment.
- Upon completion of all required service items, return the Checklist to the Service Advisor or Service Manager.
C. SERVICE ADVISOR OR SERVICE MANAGER
- Review that all required services are correctly performed and the Checklist is properly completed.
- Stamp, sign and date the Checklist once everything is in proper order and has been satisfactorily completed.
A copy of the completed Checklist should be given to the customer. State and Federal statutes require a properly completed copy of the Checklist to be retained in the vehicle history file, attached to the applicable Repair Order.
PROCEDURE TO VIEW SERVICE ITEMS IN THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER
This procedure should be used to obtain and enter the conditions (current Service statuses) into checklist column B for CBS-equipped vehicles. The 2002-2008 E65/E66 7 Series is shown below; all other models with CBS are similar.
- Insert the remote control into the ignition lock.NOTE: Not applicable for vehicles equipped with the optional Comfort Access system. However, the remote control needs to be with the Service Advisor while he is retrieving the service items from the vehicle.
- Press the Start/Stop button once with foot off the brake pedal (KL15/ignition "on").
- Press and hold the reset button located on the upper left side of the instrument cluster for about 5 seconds.
- Release the reset button when a 4-line menu appears inside the speedometer display. At the top line is the "Back" function, followed by the first 3 service items. The menu will list the service items sorted by priority of service due.NOTE: If the reset button is held too long and not released when the above 4-line menu appears, the system will go into Instrument Cluster Test Functions:
- 01 Identification
- 02 System test
- 03
- 04 Consumption
To exit Test Functions, remove the remote control from the ignition lock and repeat steps 1 through 4 above.
- Tap the reset button or the lower button located on the side of the turn signal/high beam stalk to view the next service items in the menu.
- The service item description is followed by either the mileage or month remaining before the next service is due. The residual wear of each service item is also indicated by:
- "0" indicates the service item cannot be reset at the moment. The first 20% of the service interval is also protected against premature/accidental reset.
- "!" indicates the service item can be reset.
- "-" indicates the service item is overdue.
PROCEDURE TO RESET CBS DISPLAY USING INSTRUMENT CLUSTER
The CBS reset procedure enables resetting of the individual service item. After a service has been performed, the service item must be reset to 100% (full service interval). To reset a service item:
- Repeat steps 1 - 4 from the above "Procedure to View Service Items in the Instrument Cluster".
- Select the service item with "!" or "-" by tapping the reset button or the lower turn signal stalk button (see step 5 from the above procedure).
- Press and hold the reset button for a few seconds to display a 2-line menu in the tachometer. The third menu line will appear to confirm if the reset is successful. The nominal interval for the service item will also be highlighted in the Service Need Display (SBA) located under the speedometer in the instrument cluster.
