The B-pillar satellite consists of a longitudinal acceleration sensor and a transverse acceleration sensor. These B-pillar satellites serve the purpose of protecting frontal, side and rear end crashes. The left and right sensors are of identical design and are allocated by way of mechanical coding during installation. The sensors measure in both directions.

The acceleration values registered by the micromechanical acceleration sensors are converted to digital signals. With the aid of a data telegram, the digital signals are transmitted every 228 ?s to the MRS 5 control unit. The transmitted data are evaluated in the MRS 5 control unit.

The main sensor direction provides a positive signal so that the control unit recognizes the direction of impact.
