Negative Overlap

Negative overlap occurs when the engaging clutch takes over too late or the releasing clutch drops pressure too early. The result is that the drive torque is briefly interrupted. When the engine is operating under load, the engine speed increases due to the interruption. When coasting the engine speed drops. See Fig 1.
