12 14 520 Replacing pulse generator (M62)

Interrogate fault memory of DME control unit.

Switch off ignition.

Disconnect plug connection (1).

Unscrew bolt (2).

Remove pulse generator (3).

Installation:

When replacing the transmission, flywheel or pulse generator, note whether one or more shims are fitted between the transmission housing and the pulse generator.

If one or more shims are installed, the distance between the pulse generator and the pulse teeth of the increment gear must be measured.

Turn the engine on the front central bolt so that a full pulse tooth (1) can be seen through the opening of the removed pulse generator.

Make sure that the pulse tooth (1) is exactly centered in the hole.

Use special tool 00 2 407 or 00 2 550 to determine depth to flywheel pulse teeth.

Note depth.

Measure depth (A) of pulse sensor.

Deduct depth (A) of pulse sensor from depth of flywheel. This result is the gap dimension.

Set a gap of 0.55 +/- 0.2 mm with the shims.

Set measurement of 0.55 mm as precisely as possible in order to:

  1. Enable exact misfiring detection.
  2. Prevent pulse generator from contacting pulse teeth.

Installation:

Read out fault memory of control unit of Digital Motor Electronics (DME). Check stored fault messages. Rectify faults. Now clear the fault memory.
