KDS II Wheel Alignment System

INFORMATION

Due to the advancements in vehicle suspension design such as active steering, there is an increased need for more precise alignment equipment. The KDS II alignment system allows for greater precision when performing wheel alignments while significantly reducing the time required. A collaboration was developed between the BMW Group and Hunter Engineering with the goal of developing a high precision, user-friendly, 4-wheel alignment system designed for BMW vehicles. The first Kinematic Diagnostic System (KDS) for wheel alignment (which retained the flexibility to align any other vehicle) was the result. By performing the most accurate alignments in less time, we are providing Ultimate Service which is consistent with BMW Group standards.

The BMW of North America LLC Group Warranty Claims Administration system, known as CAESAR allows for variations in respect to wheel alignment labor operation and reimbursement. The alignment equipment being used currently determines the difference in labor time reimbursement. BMW of North America, LLC announced the release of the new KDS II Alignment System in December of 2004 (B04 20 04). This new alignment system was developed to provide greater accuracy and significantly reduce the time required to perform a wheel alignment. This aligner's unique capabilities allow for the elimination of the load requirement (in most cases) which dramatically reduces the labor time while providing greater accuracy. The two labor operations remained active in CAESAR to allow centers adequate time to upgrade their alignment equipment.

BMW of North America, LLC is conducting an equipment survey. Representatives from the BMW Equipment Program will contact your center to schedule an appointment to evaluate your current workshop equipment. There is a possibility that your current alignment equipment may be upgradeable to the latest KDS II level. Your center will be provided with a complete evaluation based on your specific needs.

Starting January 1, 2010, CAESAR will no longer support two labor operations for wheel alignments.  The only labor operation available will be based upon the KDS II alignment system.

ALIGNMENT MACHINE CALIBRATION

All sensor based alignment machines must be calibrated at least 2 times a year. Camera based alignment machines such as the KDS II with optional cameras, must be calibrated once a year. Calibration certificates/paperwork must be retained and produced if requested by a BMW Group representative.
