SUBJECT

Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor Discontinued

SITUATION

The exhaust gas temperature sensor part number 11 78 1 407 264 located in the left side (cylinder bank 5 - 8) catalytic converter has been deleted in production on M5 and Z8 models since 9/2000 and will no longer be offered as a spare part when stock is depleted.

The engine control module (ECM / DME) has been reprogrammed in production to reflect this change.

The following are situations which may be encountered on M5 or Z8 vehicles produced prior to 9/2000:

  1. The "check engine" lamp is illuminated and:
    • Fault code 079 (4F hex) "Signal exhaust - gas temperature sensor" is set in the Engine Control Module (ECM/DME) indicating a defective exhaust gas temperature sensor.
  2. Removing a defective exhaust gas temperature sensor due to a sensor leak (exhaust leak).
  3. Replacing the left side catalytic converter (cylinder bank 5-8).
  4. Replacing an engine wire harness.

CORRECTION

  1. The "check engine" lamp is illuminated.

If an M5 or Z8 vehicle produced prior to 9/2000 has the "check engine" lamp illuminated and:

    • Fault code 079 (4F hex) "Signal exhaust - gas temperature sensor" is set in the Engine Control Module (ECM/DME) indicating a defective exhaust gas temperature sensor, the sensor should remain in the catalytic converter and the engine control module must be reprogrammed (software to eliminate this fault was introduced since version V24.0, or higher).
NOTE: Reprogramming the DME will prevent future faults from setting due to a defective exhaust gas temperature sensor.
  2. Removing a defective exhaust gas temperature sensor.

If it is necessary to remove a defective exhaust gas temperature sensor due to a sensor leak (exhaust leak) it must be replaced with a cap nut BMW part number 99 00 0 002 370 and the Engine Control Module (ECM/DME) must be reprogrammed as described above in correction A.

Repair procedure for replacing the exhaust gas temperature sensor with a cap nut:

Cut wire harness for the exhaust gas temperature sensor as close as possible to the connector housing / cover (1) and remove the sensor with harness (2) from the catalytic converter.

Install cap nut (1) on catalytic converter. Nut torque specification 30Nm (22lb.ft.)

Fig 2: Cap Nut On Catalytic Converter
    G04604693
  3. Replacing the left side catalytic converter.

If it is necessary to replace the left side catalytic converter (cylinder bank 5 - 8) on a vehicle produced up to 9/2000 the new replacement catalytic converter no longer incorporates the threaded mounting nipple for the exhaust gas temperature sensor.

The correct repair procedure in this case is to remove the exhaust gas temperature sensor with harness and reprogram the Engine Control Module (ECM/DME) as described above in correction A.

  4. Replacing an engine wire harness.

If an engine wire harness replacement becomes necessary, remove the exhaust gas temperature sensor with harness, replace the sensor with a cap nut and reprogram the Engine Control Module (ECM/DME) as described above in correction A.

NOTE: The new engine harness will no longer include the wiring for the exhaust gas temperature sensor.
