51 31... Notes on gluing windshield and rear window (Protection)

General:

Windows made from bulletproof laminated glass are installed in the Protection.

The windshield and rear window are glued to the body. This gluing will increase the torsional strength of the vehicle. In order to obtain a perfect bond, you must follow the installation procedure described below.

It is possible to tow or drive the vehicle without a front or rear window.

After installation, the window glass must be secured with yellow plastic adhesive tape (sourcing reference: BMW Parts Service); the paint must therefore be completely hardened after painting work.

When working with adhesive products (glue, cleaning agent, glass primer etc.):

Glues:

For gluing work, only use BMW-approved 1-component polyurethane adhesives.

To apply a uniform glue bead to window, use cartridge pistol, operated with compressed air or electric power.

NOTE: When using SikaTack - Ultrafast (hot process):
  • Heat up glue for one hour in cartridge oven (sourcing reference: BMW Parts Service) to 80°C.
  • Remove hardened adhesive compound before continuing work. Sealed glue:
  • can be heated up several times,
  • may only be stored when heated to 80°C for a maximum of 10 hours.

If this time period is exceeded, the adhesive will be damaged:

Glue expiry date:

The repair set and glue cartridges are marked with an expiry date.

The glue cannot be used after this date.

Adhesive disposal:

Pure hardened adhesive is handled as normal waste.

The adhesive is disposed of in paper bags so that it can react with moisture.

Non-hardened adhesive, cartridges and mixtures of adhesive and solvents and the like must be disposed of as special waste.

Removal of window:

When removing the windshield:

Cut through adhesive bead of window using an electric cutting tool with an oscillating blade (sourcing reference: BMW Parts Service).

Avoid damage to paintwork on body cutout.

Prior to each use, regrind the blade with a grinding stone while the machine is running (new blades also).

To remove residual cement bead in body cutout and on windshield (if windshield is to be reused):

To remove the window glass (weight), you must use special tool kit 51 9 000. (Risk of injury!)

Damage to paintwork in body cutout:

To ensure long-term corrosion protection, it is absolutely essential to touch up any damage to paintwork!

Touch up damage to paintwork on body cutout with BMW MS-AK multi-base filler (gray or red/brown).

Grind out scratches in non-visible areas and touch up with BMW MS-AK multi-base filler.

Grind large areas of damage right down to polished metal and coat with BMW MS-AK multi-base filler (coat thickness 30... 40 mu m).

Hardening time:

If a complete build-up of paint is necessary in the visible area:

CAUTION: Observe hardening time of BMW MS-AK multi-base filler, otherwise a perfect bond is not guaranteed!

Treatment of glued area in body:

GLUE TREATMENT

Glue Treatment
Original BMW SikaTack - Ultrafast or Sikaflex 255 FC
  1. Clean with spirit (available in pharmacies).
  2. Air drying time at least 1 minute.
  1. (When applied to residual bead at least 15 minutes.)

Preparation for assembly:

Prepare plastic nozzle for the shaping of the glue bead (can be cut to size during the specified ventilation time).

The inside edge of the window is coated with a protective glue bead with a (black) UV-resistant glass ceramic layer which must be treated as follows:

CAUTION: Not for US cars!
  1. Carefully but firmly rub adhesive area with Sidol.
  2. Wipe off Sidol residue with a new cloth.
  3. Repeat Points a) and b) with a new cloth.
  4. Rub adhesive area with alcohol (available from pharmacies).
  5. Air drying time at least 1 minute.
  6. Apply a thin coat of glass primer 205/5 or
    1. Sika 205/5 bonding agent.
  7. Air drying time at least 10 minutes
CAUTION: Not for US cars!
  1. Rub adhesive area with alcohol (available from pharmacies).
  2. Air drying time at least 1 minute.
  3. Apply a thin coat of glass primer 205/5 or
    1. Sika 205/5 bonding agent.
  4. Air drying time at least 10 minutes

Version with viewing panel for vehicle number (VIN) in windshield (all except US): Seal sight glass (bottom left) with Sika bonding agent 206 G+P.

Installation:

CAUTION: Assembly must be completed within 10 minutes, otherwise the cement bead will form a skin which will not be able to stick properly.
To remove the window glass (weight), you must use special tool kit 51 9 000. (Risk of injury!)
To secure windows, use only yellow plastic adhesive tape (sourcing reference: BMW Parts Service, Part No. 83 19 9 410 979).
The glass will slip down if other adhesive tapes are used. Window glass slippage causes leaks and wind noises at the upper seal.
Pretension against wind noises is created with special tool 51 3 130 (three HR foam blocks).

It is absolutely essential to remove contamination by residual glue before the glue hardens using adhesive cleaner (Sika remover 208, sourcing reference: BMW Parts Service). Do not press out the window glass again.

Hardened glue can only be removed by machine.

To prevent a build-up of pressure in the vehicle interior when closing a door:

Hardening:

The glue hardens through reaction with air moisture at room temperature.

The minimum hardening period is achieved at 22°C and 38% relative air humidity:

The car must not be subjected to load on one side during the minimum hardening period,

for example:

Moving around inside the workshop on a flat surface is permitted but do not under any circumstances drive over approach ramps for example in multistory car parks.

If the minimum hardening times are not adhered to:

Minimum hardening times. See MINIMUM HARDENING TIMES OF GLUE .

Glues and their minimum hardening times:

NOTE: Vehicles with passenger airbag:
The vehicle can be handed over to the customer after the hardening period (vehicle can be moved, adhesive-dependent) with the following warning:
All occupants must drive with seatbelts fastened during the minimum hardening period after the windshield has been glued.
CAUTION: If the minimum hardening time is not adhered to:
  • The passenger together with the windshield may fall out of the car in the event of an accident after the passenger airbag has been triggered.
