Sector Shaft

  1. Position wheels in straight-ahead position. Remove cotter pin and castle nut from center tie rod end. Press off center tie rod from steering arm. Remove air bag/steering wheel assembly. On 1995 models, see AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article. On 1996 models, see AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEM article.
  2. Turn wheel counterclockwise one turn from straight-ahead position. Install torque wrench on spindle or sector shaft. Turn wheel clockwise to read frictional torque. See SECTOR SHAFT TORQUE ADJUSTMENT SPECIFICATIONS  table.
    SECTOR SHAFT TORQUE ADJUSTMENT SPECIFICATIONS

    Measured At INCH Lbs. (N.m)
    Steering Gear 9.8-12.0 (1.0-1.4)
    Steering Wheel 10.7-15.6 (1.2-1.8)
    NOTE: Sector shaft adjustment may be checked with steering gear removed. Attach Socket (32-1-000) and Friction Gauge (00-2-000) on steering gear spindle. Adjust sector shaft as described.
  3. To adjust, turn steering wheel counterclockwise one turn from straight-ahead position. Loosen lock nut on steering gear. Turn adjusting screw clockwise until correct torque is reached when passing through center position. Tighten lock nut. Check adjustment.
