SUBJECT

M50 Cold Start

COMPLAINT

Engine difficult to start when cold at ambient temperatures below 46 degrees F.

CORRECTION

A revised M50 cold start program has been released with programming version 9.0 MODIC diskette and DIS CD 9.0. The latest modification will address cold start complaints associated with:

  1. - long crank time (ambient temperature is below 46 degrees F)
  2. - difficult to start (ambient temperature is below 46 degrees F)

PROCEDURE

  1. NON-VANOS vehicles 1/90-8/92:
    1. - If the Service Action (127) is not complete, complete it using the latest software version P9.0. Follow the procedure given in CAMPAIGN SERVICE BULLETIN 12 08 94 (4117) dated June 1995.
    2. - If a customer complaint is received and if the Service Action (127) is complete follow the determination and programming procedures given in CAMPAIGN SERVICE BULLETIN 12 08 94 (4117) or install a preprogrammed EPROM if quantities are still available (refer to Parts Information). Reimbursement information is contained within this bulletin.
  2. VANOS vehicles 9/92-12/95:

    Follow the procedure given in CAMPAIGN SERVICE BULLETIN 12 07 94 (4116) dated June 1995.

    1. - If the Service Action (130) is not complete, complete using the latest software version P9.0. Follow the procedure given in CAMPAIGN SERVICE BULLETIN 12 07 94 (4116) dated June 1995.
    2. - If a customer complaint is received and if the Service Action has been completed or is not applicable then the DME EPROM will need to be replaced; follow the procedure given in CAMPAIGN SERVICE BULLETIN 12 07 94 (4116) dated June 1995. Reimbursement information is contained within this bulletin.
    NOTE: Upon completing the determination the "Part No. Scope of EPROM del." will be displayed as "1707984".

    Part Number 1707984 is compatible with Part Number 01 00 1 469 224 and can be used on VANOS vehicles with and without EWSII.

Additional information can be obtained by referring to the attached M50 reference table.

PARTS INFORMATION

  1. NON-VANOSvehicles 1/90-8/92:

    Preprogrammed EPROMs are available for NON-VANOS vehicles only through the PDC until stock is depleted. Once stock is depleted the MODIC should be used to determine and program replacement EPROMS.

    The Non-VANOS EPROMs are control module and transmission specific as indicated below.

    The EPROMs are compatible only with a particular control module, identified by the last 3 digits of the BOSCH part number (as indicated in Fig 1 ).

    The following EPROM part numbers will be obtained after performing a "determination" as indicated in CAMPAIGN SERVICE BULLETIN 12 07 94 (4116) and CAMPAIGN SERVICE BULLETIN 12 08 94 (4117) .

  2. VANOS vehicles 9/92-12/95:

    VANOS vehicles for which Service Action 130 is complete or is not applicable the DME EPROM must be replaced. Part Number 1707984 is compatible with Part Number 01 00 1 469 224 and can be used on VANOS vehicles with and without EWSII.

NOTE: If Service Action 127 or 130 have not been completed perform the appropriate Service Action following the procedure outlined in CAMPAIGN SERVICE BULLETIN 12 08 94 (4117) for NON VANOS vehicles and CAMPAIGN SERVICE BULLETIN 12 07 94 (4116) for VANOS vehicles in order to obtain the proper warranty information.

If a customer complaint is received and Service Action 127 or 130 has previously been completed on the vehicle, reimbursement for this repair procedure may be claimed as outlined below:
