Keys and Vehicle Security
SITUATION
Spare keys stored in vehicles compromise vehicle security. They are the target of thieves who break into vehicles with the intent to steal the vehicle.
INFORMATION
- When a customer is taking delivery of a vehicle, all keys must be provided directly to the customer. Under no circumstances should one or more of the keys, for example, be put in the glove box, even if this would appear to be a customer convenience.
- Customers must be advised that all keys provided with a vehicle, including the small plastic wallet key , are active keys, and to ensure vehicle security must not be kept in the vehicle.
- If during a service appointment, a spare key is found in the vehicle, it is recommended that the owner be tactfully explained why having the key in the vehicle compromises vehicle security.
- In the event that a customer reports losing a key, this key must be disabled using DIS to prevent unauthorized use.
