SITUATION
- Some coil spring clamp jaws (P/N 90 88 6 313 123) for the BMW coil spring compressor (P/N 88 88 6 313 120) may not have been cast correctly and may not hold newer profile springs properly. The coil spring compressor was sent to all retailers via the Automatic Tool Shipment program.
CORRECTION
- Do not use spring clamp jaws P/N 313 123 until you have completed the following procedure. This program is at no cost to retailers.
- Ship both clamp jaws (313 123) to BMW using the preaddressed Federal Express shipping document included with this bulletin. Do not ship the entire tool. Make sure to fill out the sender's name and phone number (section 1) on the Fed Ex form.
- When received, BMW will inspect the clamp jaws. Good jaws will be returned, out of spec jaws will be replaced. All clamp jaws returned to you will have a paint dot near the part number stamp. Clamp jaws (313 123) without the paint dot should not be used.
- Out of spec clamp jaws will be replaced free of charge. Most cases will have a 3 day turn-around time which is dependent upon current shipping conditions.
New clamp jaws cannot be ordered from stock at this time.
- Introduction of Spring Compressor Jaw Protective Inserts
Plastic protective inserts have been developed for use in conjunction with spring compressor jaws 313 123 and 313 122. These inserts prevent damage to the spring surface and must be used when using the spring compressor.
Distribution of these tools will be through the Automatic Tool Shipment Program.
Additional tools may be purchased through your PDC.
Protective Insert P/N 90 88 6 313 128
Protective Insert P/N 90 88 6 313 127 (not Illustrated)
Protective inserts are to be applied to clamp jaws as illustrated. Insert 313 128 fits jaw 313 123, and insert 313 127 fits jaw 313 122. Refer to Repair Manual section 31 31 031.
WARNING:
The protective insert is not a fix for an incorrectly cast clamp jaw.
NOTE:
Some clamp jaws have pointed tips that do not allow the ends of inserts to lie flat against the jaw. If your jaws are of this configuration, trim the ends of the insert so that the insert lies flat.
