Clutch Assembly: Inspection

  1. Check clutch lining wear before removing assembly. Insert special tool (21 2 060 ) into slave cylinder opening up to stop on tool grip. Replace disc if gap is more than .197" (5 mm). Minimum lining thickness is .295" (7.50 mm).
  2. After removal, check lining for cracks, heat hardening or oil contamination. Mount disc on input shaft. Check linings are parallel within .006" (.15 mm). Mount dial indicator to transmission. Check disc hub runout.
  3. Maximum runout is less than .20" (.5 mm) at .12" (3 mm) from disc outer edge. Check hub slides smoothly on input shaft splines. Check end surface of pressure plate diaphragm spring fingers for wear. Check unevenness of spring finger height is less than .024" (.60 mm).
  4. Check diaphragm springs for heat distortion, loosened rivets, wear or damage. Inspect pressure plate and flywheel friction surfaces for cracks, distortion and proper thickness. Minimum flywheel thickness is .988" (25.10 mm) for 318i, 320i and 528e and 1.047" (26.60 mm) for 633i and 733i models.
  5. Resurface or replace flywheel if runout is more than .004" (.10 mm). Pressure plate friction surface must be level. Light roughness may be dressed with fine emery cloth. If surfaces are deeply scored, resurface or replace defective parts.
