Power Steering Gear: Notes

WARNING:

Work place and individual parts must be kept completely clean.

NOTE:

Power steering operates with power steering fluid, Part No. G 002 000

All parts marked with an asterisk (*) are included in the repair kit and are to be replaced during repair.

Moisten all O-rings, seals and other sealing parts with power steering fluid before installing.

Do not attempt to weld or straighten steering components

  1. Banjo bolt
    • 20 Nm (15 ft lb)
  2. Balancing line
  3. Line
  4. Banjo bolt
    • 20 Nm (15 ft lb)
  5. Right end housing with cylinder pipe
    • Drive out with mandrel
    • Install O-rings and support ring and lubricate lightly with multipurpose grease before installing in steering housing
  6. O-ring*
  7. Support ring*
  8. O-rings*
  9. Steering housing/steering gear
  10. Hose clamp
  11. Boot
    • Remove steering gear to replace
    • To check piston rod seal, loosen one hose clamp and slide boot toward center of vehicle
    • Grease toothed rod with steering gear grease, Part No. AOF 063 000 04
    • Do not install if twisted or bent; finished edge and/or colored marking line must be parallel to steering gear Fig. 7 Installation position of boot

  14. O-rings*
    • Always replace
  15. Banjo bolts
  16. Spacer bracket*
    • Install spacer brackets between both hose lines
  17. Cylinder bolt
    • 15 Nm (11 ft lb)
  18. Rotary slide valve housing
  19. Seal*
  20. Washer
  21. O-ring*
    • Always replace
    • Dimensions: 49.6 x 2.4 mm
  22. Steering pinion/rotary slide valve
  23. Adjusting bolt
  24. Bolt
    • 20 Nm (15 ft lb)
  25. Thrust piece cover
    • Holes next to each other in cover point toward front of vehicle
  26. O-ring*
    • Always replace
    • Dimensions: 36 x 2 mm
  27. Pressure spring
  28. Thrust washer
  29. Spring sleeve
    • Slotted side points toward toothed rod in lengthwise direction
  30. Thrust piece
  31. Seal*
  32. Left end housing
  33. O-ring*
    • Always replace
    • Dimensions: 40 x 1.5 mm
    • Installing in ring groove of steering housing
  34. Toothed rod/piston rod
    • Before assembling with end housing, lubricate with steering gear grease, Part No. AOF 063 000 04
    • If piston rod seal leaks, replace steering gear
  35. O-ring*
    • Always replace
  36. Self-locking bolt*
    • Always replace
    • 10 Nm (7 ft lb)
    • Before tightening, connect both pressure lines with banjo bolts to steering housing and sliding valve housing
