Steering Gear, Adjusting
Two technicians are required for adjusting. The adjustment is performed with the engine off.
-- Place the vehicle on a hoist. Refer to RAISING AND LOWERING WITH OPEN AND CLOSED AIR SUSPENSION SYSTEM .
-- Wheels in straight-ahead position.
-- Turning the steering wheel back and forth (approximately 30° off center axis) will produce a rattling noise if steering play is too large.
-- The second mechanic must carefully screw the adjustment screw -arrow- until the knocking noise can no longer be heard inside the vehicle.
-- Lower the vehicle onto its wheels. Refer to RAISING AND LOWERING WITH OPEN AND CLOSED AIR SUSPENSION SYSTEM .
-- Perform a road test.
-- Make sure that when maneuvering or negotiating corners the steering self-centers without sticking, adjust if necessary.
