Special tools and workshop equipment required
- Torque Wrench 5-50 NmVAG1331
Two technicians are required for adjustments. Adjust with engine off.
Affects Vehicles with Air Suspension
-- Place the vehicle on a hoist. Refer to POSITIONING VEHICLE ON HOIST AND WHEELS .
Affects All Vehicles
-- Remove wheel trim cap, remove cover cap on light-alloy wheels (removal hook in vehicle tool kit).
-- Remove the left front wheel.
-- Remove front left wheel housing liner. Refer to Removal and Installation .
-- Remove the expanding rivet -1- and nut -2- and remove the trim -arrow-.
-- Wheels in straight-ahead position.
-- Turning the steering wheel back and forth (approximately 30° off center axis) will produce a rattling noise if steering play is too large.
-- The second technician must carefully screw the adjustment screw -arrow- until the knocking noise can no longer be heard inside the vehicle.
-- Install the trim -arrow- and secure with an expanding rivet -1-.
-- Tighten the nut -2- to 2 Nm.
-- Install the front wheel housing liner. Refer to Removal and Installation .
-- Mount wheel and tighten. Refer to WHEEL BOLTS TIGHTENING .
-- Place vehicle on wheels. Refer to POSITIONING VEHICLE ON HOIST AND WHEELS .
-- Carry out a road test.
-- Make sure that when maneuvering or negotiating corners the steering self-centers without sticking, adjust if necessary.
