Track Control Arm, Removing and Installing
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
- Torque wrench V.A.G 1331
- Torque wrench V.A.G 1332
- Engine/transmission jack V.A.G 1383 A
- Mount T10149
- Ball joint puller T40042
- Wood block (hardwood) 30 x 50 x 1,000 mm
Removing
- Place vehicle on a hoist → Positioning Vehicle on Hoist and Wheels .
- Remove wheel covers, remove cover cap on light-alloy wheels (removal hook in vehicle tool kit).
- Remove wheel.
- Secure brake disc with a wheel bolt.
- On vehicles with an auxiliary heater, remove bolts - arrows - connecting exhaust pipe to noise insulation.
- Loosen quick-release fasteners - 1 - and - 2 - and remove noise insulation.
- Remove stabilizer → Stabilizer Bar, Removing and Installing .
NOTE:
- To prevent the ball joints from bending too much, the wheel bearing housing must be supported during the following steps.
Fig 4: Inserting Wheel Hub Support T10149 Into Engine/Transmission Jack V.A.G 1383 A And Pressing Wheel Bearing Housing Upward
- Install wheel hub support T10149 with wheel bolt.
- Insert wheel hub support T10149 in the engine/transmission jack V.A.G 1383 A and support wheel bearing housing. The dimension - a - is not considered.
- Remove nut from linkage stub of track control arm far enough so that it is flush with thread of linkage stub.
- Counterhold joint pin using 6 mm hex socket wrench. Shorten hex socket wrench to do this, if necessary.
- Press track control arm joint pins off tapered seat using ball joint puller T40042 and remove nut.
NOTE:
- Be careful not to damage CV boot in the process!
- Ensure both puller lever arms are parallel to each other when using greatest force.
- Prevent ball joint puller from falling down.
- Remove level control system sensor coupling link from track control arm - 1 -.
- Remove bolt - 3 - from track control arm.
- Press control arm - 1 - down using a wood block - arrow A - far enough so the air spring damper - 2 - can be removed forward - arrow B -. A second technician is needed for this.
- Move steering to the left for the left track control arm and to the right for the right track control arm.
- Remove track control arm bolt on subframe.
- Press wheel bearing housing outward and remove track control arm from the subframe.
- Pull track control arm forward diagonally out of the wheel bearing housing.
- If track control arm is installed again, remove locking compound from the ball joint threads first.
Installing
Installation is in reverse order of removal. Observe the following when doing so:
- First tighten bolts/nuts on components with bonded rubber bushings by hand. Raise wheel bearing housing to tighten bolts/nuts → Wheel Bearing Housing, Raising to Control Position .
- Install vehicle level control system sensor coupling rod - 1 - on control arm → Front Level Control System Sensor, Removing and Installing .
- Install left and right couplings - 2 - and.
- Remove bolt - 3 - from air spring damper on control arm.
- Tighten stabilizer bar mounting bolts.
- Remove nut from the joint pin.
- Install noise insulation.
- Mount wheel and tighten → 44 - WHEELS, TIRES, VEHICLE ALIGNMENT .
- Place vehicle on wheels → Positioning Vehicle on Hoist and Wheels .
- Re-adapt control position → Control Position, Programming .
