ATF Level, Checking And Correcting
Special tools and workshop equipment required
- Used Oil Collection and Extraction UnitSMN372500
- Vehicle diagnostic tester for example the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester.
- \
- CVT Gearbox Filler SystemVAS5162
- Protective eyewear
The continuously variable automatic transmission multitronic 01J requires a different ATF than shift automatics. Only use replacement part ATF for the multitronic 01J transmission. ATF specification, refer to the Parts.
The illustration on the reservoir for the CVT Gearbox Filler SystemVAS5162 is in the upper left graphic refers to the use of special ATF for multitronic transmissions (CVT transmission).
In addition, the necessary work steps for filling are illustrated, which are described as follows:
- Engine must not be started if only a small amount or no ATF is in the transmission after repair work or after significant ATF loss.
- In this case, a preliminary filling with 4.5 to 5 liters (4.75 to 5.28 qts) ATF must be performed.
Test Conditions
- The transmission must not be in the emergency running
- Move vehicle onto a shop hoist or over a work pit so that it is absolutely horizontal.
- Exhaust hose/-hoses of an exhaust extraction system connected.
- Engine running at idle.
- The A/C and the heater must be off.
- Connect the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester, OBD and select 02 - Transmission Electronics .
- At the start of the testing, the ATF temperature must not be higher than 30 °C (86 °F); let the transmission cool down.
The ATF level will vary depending on the temperature of the ATF.
It is possible to overfill the ATF if the level is checked when the temperature is too low.
It is possible to underfill the ATF if the level is checked when the temperature is too high.
Overfilling or underfilling will influence the function of the transmission.
Read the ATF temperature on the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester.
Check the ATF Temperature.
Display on the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester:
-- In selection -1- press the function Measured Values and go further by pressing the → -button.
Display on the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester:
-- Press the buttons 1 0 in the button field -1- for Display Group 10 and then press the Q button to confirm.
Display on the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester:
-- Read the ATF temperature in the display field -3-.
ATF Level, Checking and Correcting
Engine continues running at idle.
The ATF level is checked at the ATF inspection plug.
ATF level is correct if a little bit of fluid still escapes at the ATF check plug between 35 ° and 45 °C (95 ° and 113 °F (50 °C (122 °F) for hot countries) ATF temperature (dependent on the fluid level when warming up).
-- Fill the CVT Gearbox Filler SystemVAS5162 with ATF for the CVT-transmission.
- ATF specification, refer to the Parts.
The ATF filler tool must be clean and the ATF must not be mixed with any other ATF.
-- Secure the filled reservoir CVT Gearbox Filler SystemVAS5162 as high as possible on the vehicle.
The shut-off valve on the CVT Gearbox Filler SystemVAS5162 must be closed.
-- Press the brake pedal and move the selector lever through all the gears ("P", "R", "N", "D", "S"). Leave the selector lever in each gear approximately two seconds.
-- Remove the rear noise insulation, refer to NOISE INSULATION OVERVIEW .
-- Place the Used Oil Collection and Extraction UnitSMN372500 under the transmission.
Wear protective eyewear.
-- Remove the ATF check plug -B- when the ATF reaches 35 °C (95 °F).
Approximately 5 cl of ATF will always drain initially from the internal oil level pipe when the plug is unscrewed.
If ATF continues to flow out of the ATF inspection opening via the overflow tube before the ATF reaches 45 °C (113 °F), the ATF level is OK.
-- Replace the ATF check plug and tighten it.
- Tightening Specification: 30 Nm.
The ATF check plug must be installed again before the ATF reaches a temperature of 45 °C (113 °F) (50 °C (122 °F) with hot climates).
If the ATF gets warmer than 45 °C (113 °F), it will leak out and the transmission will not have enough ATF.
The ATF level test is now completed.
-- End function Measured Values by pressing the ← button.
-- Press End Output .
-- Switch off the ignition and disconnect the diagnosis connector.
Add ATF if no ATF leaks out of the ATF check plug up to 40 °C (104 °F), refer to ATF LEVEL, CHECKING AND CORRECTING .
ATF LEVEL, CHECKING AND CORRECTING
Engine continues running at idle.
-- Attach the connection on the shut-off valve of CVT Gearbox Filler SystemVAS5162 into opening of ATF inspection plug -B-.
-- Turn the valve to the filler hose -lower arrow-. The ATF flows into the transmission.
-- Hold a suitable container under the valve on the CVT Gearbox Filler SystemVAS5162.
-- Turn the valve in the flow direction -down arrow- and check the ATF level.
The ATF level is correct, when the ATF drips out of the valve before it reaches 45 °C (113 °F).
At first approximately 5 cl of ATF will flow out of the inner fluid level pipe.
-- If no ATF leaks out, then turn the valve back toward the filler hose and let more ATF flow in. Check the ATF level again.
-- Remove the valve one the correct ATF level is reached.
A little ATF will drip out when the valve is removed.
-- Replace the ATF check plug and tighten it.
