Steering Column
Special tools and workshop equipment required
- Torque Wrench 5-50 Nm V.A.G 1331
- Torque Wrench 40-200 Nm V.A.G 1332
Removing
The steering column is delivered only as a complete replacement part. Service is not possible.
The steering lock housing can be transferred.
Before starting work on electrical equipment and removing steering wheel, the following conditions must be fulfilled:
- Remove Ground (GND) cable from the battery. Refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- The wheels must be in the straight-ahead position.
If these notes are not observed, the airbag system may not function properly during vehicle operation!
-- Set the wheels to the straight ahead position.
-- Pull lever downward beneath the steering column.
-- Push the steering column as far down as possible and remove it.
-- Remove the steering wheel. Refer to STEERING WHEEL WITH AIRBAG .
-- Remove steering column switch trim. Refer to Removal and Installation .
-- Remove storage compartment on driver side. Refer to Removal and Installation .
-- Remove the instrument cluster. Refer to [For engine(s) CBRA, BPY, CCTA, CBFA] Removal and Installation .
-- Remove the steering column switch. Refer to [For engine(s) CBRA, BPY, CCTA, CBFA] Removal and Installation .
-- Disconnect the harness connector -1-.
-- Free up the cable guide -arrows-.
-- Replace the steering lock housing if necessary. Refer to [For engine(s) CBRA, BPY, CCTA, CBFA] Removal and Installation .
-- Disconnect the GND wire -1- from the steering column.
-- Unclip the cable guide -2-.
-- Remove securing nuts -arrows- and remove foot well trim.
-- Remove the bolt -1- and pull off universal joint -2- from steering gear.
-- First remove the fuse panel screw -arrow-, then the bolts -1-.
-- Remove the crash bolster after loosening the lower bolts -1-, if applicable.
-- Carefully remove steering column upward.
Correct handling and transport of steering column, refer to STEERING COLUMN, HANDLING AND TRANSPORTING .
Installing
Installation is the reverse of removal, with special attention to the following:
Tightening specifications, refer to STEERING COLUMN AND BRACKET WITH FREQUENCY DAMPER OVERVIEW .
-- Align steering column to mounting bracket and install.
The hole -arrow A- and the pins -arrow B- must align.
-- Install the crash bolsters, if applicable.
-- Tighten the bolts -1- on the steering column.
-- Tighten the bolt on the fuse panel -arrow-. Refer to [For engine(s) CBRA, BPY, CCTA, CBFA] Removal and Installation
-- Install the universal joint -2- on the steering gear pinion gear and tighten the bolt -1-.
-- Clip the wiring guide -2- to the steering column.
-- Attach the GND wire -1- to the steering column and tighten it to 5 Nm.
-- Move the cable guide -arrows- back to its original position.
-- Connect connector -1-.
-- Install the steering column switch. Refer to [For engine(s) CBRA, BPY, CCTA, CBFA] Removal and Installation .
-- Install the instrument cluster. Refer to [For engine(s) CBRA, BPY, CCTA, CBFA] Removal and Installation .
-- Install the trim for the steering column switch. Refer to Removal and Installation .
-- Install storage compartment on driver side. Refer to Removal and Installation .
-- Calibrate the steering angle sensor -G85-. Refer to WHEEL ALIGNMENT .
After the following assembly work, the Steering Angle Sensor -G85- must be calibrated:
- When the steering angle sensor has been removed or replaced.
- After removing or replacing steering column.
- After removing or replacing steering column switch.
- After removing or replacing the steering lock housing.
- If the steering wheel was offset.
- After removing or replacing coil spring with slip ring (spiral spring).
- After removing or replacing steering column electronics control module.
