09G Transaxle

  1. Requirements for checking ATF level are as follows:
    • Transmission not in emergency running mode.
    • Vehicle in horizontal position.
    • Vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051 connected, vehicle self-diagnosis mode activated and vehicle system "02 - transmission electronics" selected.
    • Air conditioner and heating must be switched off.
    • At start of test, ATF temperature must not be higher than 30° C; allow transmission to cool down if necessary.
  2. Using VAS 5051 (factory scan tool), or equivalent aftermarket scan tool, select diagnosis function "08-Read measured value block" from menu (1). See Fig 1 . Enter display group (maximum input value = 255). Enter "6" for "display group number 6" in zone "2", and confirm entry by pressing "Q" key. See Fig 2 . Read ATF temperature in display zone (1). See Fig 3 . Check ATF level once ATF temperature is 86° F (30° C).

  4. Raise and support vehicle. Ensure vehicle is level. Place drip tray (V.A.G. 1306) underneath transmission. Start engine and let idle. Once ATF temperature reaches 95° F (35° C), unscrew ATF inspection plug (A). See Fig 4 .
  5. NOTE: Always replace seal for ATF inspection plug. See Fig 5 .
NOTE: ATF inspection plug must be screwed in before ATF reaches 113° F (45° C), or 122° F (50° C) for tropical countries.

  6. ATF present in overflow pipe (arrow "2") will leak when inspection plug is removed. See Fig 6 . If ATF drains from inspection hole before ATF has reached 104° F (40° C), ATF level is OK. Tighten ATF inspection plug with NEW seal to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  7. If no ATF emerges from inspection hole before ATF has reached 113° F (45° C), top off ATF.
  8. Remove sound insulation tray (arrows). See Figure .
  9. Using Torx socket head (T55), remove filler plug (arrow). See Figure . Filler plug seal MUST always be replaced.
  10. Attach hook of filler system (V.A.G. 1924) in filler plug hole (arrow). See Figure . Top off ATF until ATF emerges via overflow pipe (arrow "2") from inspection hole. See Fig 6 .
  11. Install ATF inspection plug. Tighten ATF inspection plug to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  . Install sound insulation tray.
  12. Once ATF level is OK, exit function "08 - Read measured value block" by pressing "left arrow" key. Switch ignition off and disconnect Data Link Connector.
