Description & Operation: Notes

NOTE: Only wiring diagrams for S4 are included in this article.

Instrument cluster consists of speedometer, Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) odometer, tachometer, coolant and oil temperature gauges, clock, fuel gauge, voltmeter, warning lights, gear selector position display, LCD outside temperature display, various control switches and Mini-Check system (with standard instrument cluster), or Driver Information System (with optional instrument cluster). See Fig 1 .

Instrument cluster functions are controlled by an internal microprocessor with OBD-II capabilities. If faults occur within instrument cluster components or inputs, DTCs will be set. Mini-Check system or Driver Information System monitors the condition of brake system, coolant temperature, fuel level, and oil pressure. When a fault occurs in one of these systems, a symbol is displayed in the Mini-Check display window between the tachometer and speedometer.

WARNING: Deactivate air bag system before performing any service operation. See AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article. DO NOT apply electrical power to any component on steering column without first deactivating air bag system. Air bag may deploy.
