Work sequence
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Audi RS 6. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Engine removed, see ENGINE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
NOTE:
- All cable ties which are opened or cut open on removal must be replaced in same position when installing.
- Any heat insulation sleeves which are taken off when removing must be re-attached in same position when installing.
- Place a drip tray underneath.
- Drain engine oil.
- Place engine/transmission assembly on work bench or engine/transmission floor. Support/secure engine and transmission with pieces of squared timber.WARNING:
- Ensure that engine/transmission assembly rests safely to avoid risk of accident.
- Relocate engine lifting tackle 3033 as described below before performing any further work on engine. The center of gravity shifts after unbolting transmission.
- Hook a second shackle 10-222 A12 onto front right engine lifting eye.
- Attach lifting tackle 3033 to shackles 10-222 A12 and hook onto workshop crane VAS 6100, as shown in Fig 1.
- Take up some of the weight of the engine with lifting tackle and workshop crane VAS 6100.
- Unbolt bracket for ATF-line at upper part of oil pan (arrow).
- Unplug connectors for left oxygen sensors before and after catalytic converter.
- Move lines and hoses clear.
- Unbolt left front exhaust pipe from turbocharger (arrows).
- Remove bolt -1- and loosen bolt -2- a few turns. See Fig 4.
- Pull out guide tube -3- with oil dipstick.
- Unscrew bolt (arrow) and detach oil return line from upper section of sump.
- Release hose clamp -2-. See Fig 6.
- Unbolt temperature sensor of exhaust gas temperature sender -3-.
- Unscrew nuts -1-.
- Unscrew nuts -1- to -12- and remove left exhaust manifold.
- Unbolt Engine Speed (RPM) Sensor -G28- -item 1-.
- Unplug electrical connector -2- from Speedometer Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) -G22-.
- Unplug connectors for right oxygen sensors before and after catalytic converter.
- Move wiring clear.
- Unbolt front right exhaust pipe from turbocharger (arrows).
- Place oil drip tray underneath.
- Remove oil filter.
- Unscrew bolt (arrow) and detach oil return line from upper section of sump.
- Disconnect vacuum hose -2-. See Fig 11.
- Remove bolt -3-.
- Release hose clamp -4-. See Fig 11.
- Unbolt temperature sensor of exhaust gas temperature sender -1-.
- Unscrew nuts -5-.
- Remove bolt (arrow) and remove pressure line from turbocharger.NOTE: Depicted in illustration with exhaust manifold removed.
- Unscrew nuts -1- to -12-. See Fig 13.
- Detach heat shield above differential cover on transmission
- Pull turbocharger slightly downward and remove right exhaust manifold.
- Tie up right turbocharger at engine.
- Unscrew bolt (arrow).
- Unscrew bolts -1- and -2-. See Fig 15.
- Remove starter and detach wiring -3- and -4-.
- Unscrew 6 torque converter bolts (arrows) through opening of removed starter (turn crankshaft 1/3 turn each time).NOTE: To loosen torque converter bolts, counter-hold central bolt on crankshaft.
- Unscrew bottom engine/transmission connecting bolts, then top connecting bolts.
- Working through opening on left side of bell-housing, push torque converter off drive plate and at the same time separate engine from transmission.
- Secure torque converter in transmission to prevent it falling out.
