Checking Throttle Position Sensor Resistance

  1. Using (VW 1594) connector test kit, connect DVOM, switched to resistance range to the following terminals, see Figure, in turn:
    • Terminals No. 1 and 2: resistance must be 1500-2600 ohms.
    • Terminals No. 2 and 3: resistance must be 750-1300 ohms.
  2. Measure resistance again while bringing throttle lever slowly to Wide Open Throttle (WOT) position. Resistance must increase to 3600 ohms maximum. See THROTTLE POSITION (TP) SENSOR RESISTANCE  table.
  3. If resistance is incorrect (for one or both circuits), replace TP sensor. After replacing TP sensor, adjust the Closed Throttle Position (CTP). For CTP sensor adjustment procedures. See CLOSED THROTTLE POSITION SWITCH ADJUSTMENT under ADJUSTMENTS in ON-VEHICLE ADJUSTMENTS article.
    NOTE: Adjusting Closed Throttle Position (CTP) switch automatically adjust the throttle position sensor.

(1) Resistance should gradually increase as throttle is opened.
