Ignition Timing: 2.3L

  1. Ensure engine is warmed to operating temperature, idle speed set correctly, all accessories off, and fault light in dash is off. Bridge fuel pump relay with spare fuse.
  2. Wait at least 4 seconds for ignition control unit to provide a constant timing value after bridging fuel pump relay. Adjust timing to specification.
  3. Remove spare fuse from fuel pump relay and briefly raise engine speed above 2500 RPM to cancel fault code. Run engine at idle and ensure idle speed is within specification.
NOTE: Tester (VW 1367) can also be used to check ignition timing on 2.3L engine. Follow manufacturers instructions with unit.
