Fuel Pump Relay Circuit

  1. Ensure fuse No. 13 (15 amp) in fuse/relay panel is okay. Remove fuel pump relay from panel. Ensure Jumper (US 4480/3) is turned off. Install Jumper (US 4480/3) to fuse panel in place of fuel pump relay.
  2. Turn switch of Jumper (US 4480/3) on. Fuel pump should run. If fuel pump does not run, check wiring and relay panel for open circuit.
  3. If fuel pump runs with jumper wire installed, but does not run when engine is cranking, check fuel pump relay and connections. Turn off Jumper (US 4480/3).
  4. Turn ignition on. Connect test lamp between terminal 46 of fuel pump relay socket and ground. Test lamp must light.
  5. Connect test lamp between terminal 50 and 51. Engage starter. Test lamp must flicker.
  6. Connect test light between terminal 46 and 50. Test lamp must light. Connect test lamp between terminals 46 and 52. Test lamp must light.
  7. If test lamp fails to light in all tests, check for break in wiring. If test lamp lights in all tests, and still no voltage is present at fuel pump, replace fuel pump relay.
NOTE: Tester (VW 1367) is necessary to check Idle Speed Stabilization system on vehicles with CIS-E fuel injection.
