Test 5: Electronic Ignition Retard Test

  1. Warm engine to normal operating temperature. Disconnect vacuum switch assembly wire connector (mounted on wheelhouse). Disconnect and plug distributor vacuum hose. Disconnect knock sensor wire connector and ground to block. Increase engine RPM to 1600 and check ignition timing. Adjust if necessary.
  2. Allow engine to return to idle speed. Connect vacuum switch electrical connector. Increase engine speed to 1600 RPM. Timing should advance 6 degrees. If so, go to next step. If not, check for vacuum switch failure. Check for continuity from switch to MCU. Replace MCU and retest.
  3. Allow engine to return to idle speed. Connect the electrical connector to the knock sensor. Increase engine RPM to 1600 while checking timing. Knock on the intake manifold close to the knock sensor. Timing should retard.
  4. If it does not retard, check for the electrical continuity of knock sensor harness connector to J2 pin 16 of MCU connector. Replace knock sensor and retest. If timing did retard, allow the engine to return to idle speed. Connect vacuum hose to distributor. Test is complete.
