Description And Operation

DESCRIPTION 

The Coil-on-Plug (COP) are high energy coils with s ground circuit to prevent any unintended discharge which could result in a misfire. Each COP:

• Is used with each spark plug
• Is mounted over the top of the spark plug installed in a cavity of the cylinder head

The COP consists of a:

• Coil assembly
• Primary electrical connector
• Secondary conductor
• Spark plug boot

OPERATION 

• The Auto Shutdown (ASD) relay provides battery voltage to the ignition coil.
• The PCM provides a ground path with an internal Low Side Driver (LSD).
• When the PCM opens the LSD, the ground path is broken and the energy in the coil primary.
• The PCM will de-energize the ASD relay if it does not receive the crankshaft position sensor and camshaft position sensor inputs
