Engine Coolant - Change

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to HOISTING, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  2. Remove the hood. Refer to HOOD, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  3. Remove the protection/guard under engine. Refer to SHIELD, REAR AIR EXTRACTOR, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  4. Remove the front aerodynamic guard. Refer to BELLY PAN, CENTER, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATIONBELLY PAN, ENGINE, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATIONBELLY PAN, FRONT, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATIONBELLY PAN, REAR, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATIONBELLY PAN, SIDE, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  5. Remove the radiator cooling fan air duct. Refer to RADIATOR, ENGINE COOLING, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .

Procedure for draining the circuit

NOTE:

Do not remove the expansion tank cap when the engine is hot as there is a danger of scalding.

  1. With the engine cold, undo the engine coolant supply tank cap.

  2. Open the radiator coolant drainage tap.
    NOTE:

Collect the coolant in a suitable container.

    NOTE:

Only part of the fluid inside the pipes can be collected, because some pipes are located under the car floor, that is lower than the radiator.

  6. Open the bleed valve, placed on the supply pipe to the heat exchanger.
  7. Pour in the fluid through the filler and close the bleed screws respectively when fluid starts to flow out.

  8. Complete the introduction of fluid until the MAX level is reached and then close the filler cap.
  9. Start the engine and let it idle for about 2 minutes.
  10. At the same time top up the fluid, if necessary, to the MAX mark.
  11. Tighten the plug on the reservoir filler.
  12. Start the engine and remove the air from the circuit by pumping the accelerator regularly and gradually (every 30 secs) up to a speed of around 3000 rpm. This operation should be carried out until the thermostat opens and the fan switches on and off at least 3 times. During this operation keep the climate control system switched off to prevent the fan from coming on for reasons independent from the heating of the coolant. If there is a noticeable drop in the level (below the MIN reference) during this stage, let the engine idle and open the cap very carefully, topping up the fluid to the MAX level, then close the cap fully and remove all the air from the system.
  13. At the end of the above operations, make sure that the amount of fluid introduced into the system is at least equal to the amount collected during the draining stage.
  14. Install the radiator cooling fan air duct. Refer to RADIATOR, ENGINE COOLING, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  15. Install the front aerodynamic guard. Refer to BELLY PAN, CENTER, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATIONBELLY PAN, ENGINE, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATIONBELLY PAN, FRONT, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATIONBELLY PAN, REAR, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATIONBELLY PAN, SIDE, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  16. Install the protection/guard under engine. Refer to SHIELD, REAR AIR EXTRACTOR, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  17. Install the hood. Refer to HOOD, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  18. Remove the car from the lift.
