Ignition Timing Inspection (3.0L Engine): Inspection

How to use this service information .

NOTICE: 

• If a DTC is present, diagnose and repair the cause before continuing with this inspection.
• When working with a vehicle equipped with the electronic air suspension, be sure to set it to the leveling off mode to prevent unexpected operation. Refer to the Electronic Air Suspension System Service Precautions - Refer to: Electronic Air Suspension System Connector Fitting Precautions or Electronic Air Suspension System Service Precautions for the procedure.

1. Ignition Timing - Inspect

   Preconditions 

   • No DTCs Set
   • Engine Warmed Up
     NOTE:

     Warm up the engine by raising the engine speed around 3, 000 RPM until the cooling fan(s) comes on.

   • Idle Speed Normal Condition - Refer to: Idle Speed Inspection (3.0L Engine) or Idle Speed Inspection (3.5L Engine)
   • HDS Connected

   Procedure/Specifications 

   1. Start the engine.

   2. Connect the timing light (a) to the service loop (white tape) (b). Check the ignition timing under the following conditions.

   			Sport+ Mode	3-14 deg. BTDC

   *: RED mark is located at 5 deg. BTDC from WHITE mark.

   Result 

   • If the measurement is not within specifications, check the camshaft timing - Refer to: Camshaft Timing Inspection (3.0L Engine) or Camshaft Timing Inspection (3.5L Engine) . If the camshaft timing is OK, update the PCM - Refer to: PCM Reset or PCM Update if it does not have the latest software, or substitute a known-good PCM - Refer to: Radiator Area (3.5L Engine) or Radiator Area (3.0L Engine) , then recheck. If the system works properly, and the PCM was substituted, replace the original PCM - Refer to: Radiator Area (3.5L Engine) or Radiator Area (3.0L Engine) .
