Wipers/Washers System Description
Basic Control/Function
The intelligent controlled wiper system detects the operating angle of the windshield wiper motor in order to recognize the wiping position of the wiper blade assembly. The wiping speed of the windshield wiper motor is controlled according to a target speed map corresponding to the wiping speed (LO or HI), to perform wiping speed control. This wiping speed control keeps the wiping speed of the wiper blade assembly consistent.
Parking Position Operation
During wiper operation, the parking position operation is performed when any of the following conditions are met:
- When the vehicle is turned to the OFF (LOCK) mode.
- When the wiper/washer switch is turned off.
- When the wiper/washer switch is in AUTO position, but the automatic wiper signal is not sent from the automatic lighting/rain sensor.
Break-Away Operation
The intelligent controlled wiper system performs blockage detection during wiper operation and performs obstacle clearance control upon detection. The operation of the obstacle clearance control is the following: If the wiper motor is detected to have stopped for 200 milliseconds or more continuously while operating at maximum drive, a blockage is detected. Reverse action is used if a blockage is detected outside the reversal limit range. If a blockage is detected inside the reversal limit range, the wiper motor stops operation for 800 milliseconds, then resumes wiping. (Blockage removal action) After blockage removal action is detected (counted) five times within the reversal limit range, the wiper is judged to be in a locked state, and the wiper motor stops. After the wiper motor stops, it restarts when the wiper/washer switch is turned off and on again.
Service Position
Operating Condition
When the wiper is active or stops at any position lower than the upper reversal position, turn and hold the MIST switch, and then turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode to stop the wiper blades at the service position.
End Conditions
- Vehicle is in the ON mode.
- The upper reversing position is recognized.
Rear Window Wiper Control
The body control module performs control according to the wiper switch signal, back-up light signal, and the washer switch signal. Wiper and washer linkage or reverse linkage is set.
Automatic Lighting/Rain Sensor Connection Check (With Automatic Wiper)
The body control module spends about a second to check if the automatic lighting/rain sensor is connected every time a 12 volt battery is connected to the body control module. When the body control module does not detect the connection within the time period, the automatic wiper function does not work.
Failsafe Function
Hardware Failsafe
When the control module CPU for the windshield wiper control unit/motor is abnormal, the failsafe operation is as follows:
| Output Name | Fixed Value |
|---|---|
| Motor Drive Circuit | All OFF |
| LIN Communication Circuit | OFF |
Body Control Module Frame Error
- When there is a BUS off error or wiper/washer switch signal error, the failsafe operation is as follows:
If the backup line switches from OFF to ON, failsafe operation starts with Step 1.
| Backup Line | Failsafe Operation When Wiper is Active | Failsafe operation When Wiper is Not Active | ||
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | OFF | Parking operation (Except for wiping in AUTO mode) | No operation (Remains stopped) | |
| 2 | ON | Step 1 | HI operation for 3 minutes -> Step 2 | |
| Step 2 | LO operation for 3 minutes -> Step 3 | |||
| Step 3 | Intermittent operation (speed-dependent variable mode) for 12 minutes -> Step 4 | |||
| Step 4 | Parking operation | |||
- If a wiper switch signal error occurs while the wipers are operating in auto mode, the failsafe operation is as follows:
| Previous Operation in AUTO Mode | Failsafe Operation | ||
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | HI | Step 1 | HI operation for 3 minutes -> Step 2 |
| 2 | LO | Step 2 | LO operation for 3 minutes -> Step 3 |
| Previous Operation in AUTO Mode | Failsafe Operation | ||
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 | INT, Lower reversal position, or Parking position | Step 3 | Intermittent operation (speed-dependent variable mode) for 12 minutes -> Step 4 |
| Step 4 | Parking operation | ||
BACKUP LINE and LIN Inconsistency Error
If an error occurs due to inconsistency between the backup line and LIN (IG1 signal and wiper switch signal), the failsafe operation is as follows:
| Backup Line | IG1 | Wiper Switch Position | Failsafe Operation | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| OFF | ON | LO or HI Switch ON | Depends on the LIN signal | |
| ON | LO and HI Switch OFF | HI operation | ||
| OFF | -- | Step 1 | HI operation for 3 minutes -> Step 2 | |
| Step 2 | LO operation for 3 minutes -> Step 3 | |||
| Step 3 | Intermittent operation (speed-dependent variable mode) for 12 minutes -> Step 4 | |||
| Step 4 | Parking operation | |||
Thermal Protection Function
The intelligent controlled wiper system performs thermal protection control to prevent excess heat generation by the windshield wiper control unit/motor due to abnormal load. If the temperature of the windshield wiper control unit/motor exceeds the protective action temperature, the wiping speed is reduced, and is restored once the temperature falls below the reset action temperature.
