DTC Advanced Diagnostics: P2118 (3.0L Engine)
DTC P2118: Throttle Actuator Current Range/Performance Problem
General Description
The diagnosis related to the electric throttle control system is done during the vehicle ON mode and OFF (LOCK) mode. The powertrain control module (PCM) opens and closes the throttle actuator to monitor the performance of the throttle body. If any of the following condition is detected, the PCM detects a malfunction and stores a DTC.
- Throttle actuator output duty failure
The throttle actuator output duty is out of a specified range.
- Throttle actuator power supply failure
The throttle actuator power supply voltage is a specified voltage.
- Electric throttle control driver IC failure
The throttle actuator current is a specified current.
Monitor Execution, Sequence, Duration, DTC Type
| Execution | Continuous |
| Sequence | None |
| Duration | 5.0 seconds or more*, 500 milliseconds or more** |
| DTC Type | One drive cycle, MIL on |
*: Throttle actuator output duty failure**: Throttle actuator power supply failure and electric throttle control driver IC failure
Enable Conditions
| Condition | Minimum | Maximum |
|---|---|---|
| 12 volt battery voltage [Battery] | 6.0 V | - |
| Other* | Not during throttle valve fully closed position learning | |
[ ]: HDS Parameter
Malfunction Threshold
Any of the following condition occurs:
- Throttle actuator output duty failure
The throttle actuator output duty is more than +/- 100 % for at least 5.0 seconds.
- Throttle actuator power supply failure
The throttle actuator power supply voltage is less than 5.0 V for at least 500 milliseconds.
- Electric throttle control driver IC failure
The throttle actuator current is more than 8 A for at least 500 milliseconds.
Possible Cause
- Throttle actuator MTR2 line short to power
- Throttle actuator MTR1 line short to power
- Throttle actuator MTR2 line short to ground
- Throttle actuator MTR1 line short to ground
- Throttle body failure
- PCM internal circuit failure
Diagnosis Details
Conditions for setting the DTC
When a malfunction is detected, the MIL comes on and a Pending DTC, a Confirmed DTC, the freeze data, and the on-board snapshot are stored in the PCM memory.
Conditions for clearing the DTC
The MIL is cleared if the malfunction does not return in three consecutive trips in which the diagnostic runs. The MIL, the Pending DTC, the Confirmed DTC, the freeze data, and the on-board snapshot can be cleared with the scan tool clear command.
