DTC Advanced Diagnostics: P2091 (3.0L Engine)
DTC P2091: Variable Valve Timing Control (VTC) B (Exhaust, Bank 1) Control Circuit High Voltage
General Description
The variable valve timing control (VTC) consists of the VTC actuator, the VTC oil control solenoid valve, sensors, and the powertrain control module (PCM). The PCM controls the VTC oil control solenoid valve by the duty cycle and supplies hydraulic pressure to the advance chamber or the retard chamber in the actuator so the valve timing is optimized depending on the driving conditions (engine load, engine speed, and vehicle speed). The PCM monitors the VTCEXB1 terminal voltage level via diagnosis interface circuit and detects VTC oil control solenoid valve B (bank 1) output signal rising/falling edge correctly. If there is no output signal edge even if the PCM outputs pulse width modulation (PWM) duty signal, the PCM detects a malfunction and stores the DTC.

[ ]: HDS Parameter
Malfunction Threshold
There is no output signal change (fixed to high voltage) for at least 0.5 second while the PCM outputs PWM duty signal to the VTC oil control solenoid valve B (bank 1).
Possible Cause
- VTC oil control solenoid valve B (bank 1) VTCEXB1 line open
- VTC oil control solenoid valve B (bank 1) VTCEXB1 line short to power
- VTC oil control solenoid valve B (bank 1) failure
- PCM internal circuit failure
Diagnosis Details
Conditions for setting the DTC
When a malfunction is detected, the MIL comes on and a Pending DTC, a Confirmed DTC, the freeze data, and the on-board snapshot are stored in the PCM memory.
Conditions for clearing the DTC
The MIL is cleared if the malfunction does not return in three consecutive trips in which the diagnostic runs. The MIL, the Pending DTC, the Confirmed DTC, the freeze data, and the on-board snapshot can be cleared with the scan tool clear command.
