DTC Advanced Diagnostics: P16E3 (3.0L Engine)
DTC P16E3: PGM-FI-Battery Sensor LIN Communication Error
General Description
The local interconnect network (LIN) line connects the alternator and the powertrain control module (PCM). The LIN uses a master/slave protocol to send and receive data to the different components on the line. The slave node communicates according to the master node. If the PCM cannot receive signals from the 12 volt battery sensor or the received information is abnormal, the PCM detects a malfunction and stores a DTC.
Monitor Execution, Sequence, Duration, DTC Type
| Execution | Continuous |
| Sequence | None |
| Duration | 20 seconds or more |
| DTC Type | Two drive cycles, MIL off |
Enable Conditions
| Condition | Minimum | Maximum |
|---|---|---|
| PCM voltage | 9.5 V | - |
| Vehicle | ON mode | |
| Other | CAN communication between PCM and gauge control module is OK | |
Malfunction Threshold
Either one of the conditions is met for at least 20 seconds:
- The PCM cannot receive any information from the 12 volt battery sensor via the LIN line.
- The information sent from the 12 volt battery sensor is abnormal.
Possible Cause
- 12 volt battery sensor LIN(METER) line short
- 12 volt battery sensor LIN(METER) line open
- 12 volt battery sensor power supply line open
- 12 volt battery sensor failure
- Gauge control module internal circuit failure (LIN communication circuit)
Diagnosis Details
Conditions for setting the DTC
When a malfunction is detected during the first drive cycle, a Pending DTC is stored in the PCM memory. If the malfunction returns in the next (second) drive cycle, a Confirmed DTC, the freeze data, and the on-board snapshot are stored. The MIL does not come on.
Conditions for clearing the DTC
The Pending DTC, the Confirmed DTC, the freeze data, and the on-board snapshot can be cleared with the scan tool clear command.
