DTC Advanced Diagnostics: P0087 (3.0L Engine)
DTC P0087: Fuel Rail Pressure Too Low
General Description
The powertrain control module (PCM) controls fuel pressure delivered by the high pressure fuel pump. The measured fuel pressure is compared with the target fuel pressure. If the difference between the measured fuel pressure and the target fuel pressure is large, the PCM detects a malfunction.
Monitor Execution, Sequence, Duration, DTC Type
| Execution | Continuous |
| Sequence | None |
| Duration | 20 seconds or more |
| DTC Type | One drive cycle, MIL on |
Enable Conditions
| Condition | Minimum | Maximum |
|---|---|---|
| Target fuel pressure fluctuation amount per 50 milliseconds* | - | -2.5 MPa (-25.493 kgf/cm 2, -362.6 psi) |
| Other | Continue fuel feedback control for 15 seconds or more | |
| Not during fuel cut-off for 3 seconds or more | ||
*: Continue for 3 seconds or more.
Malfunction Threshold
Measured fuel pressure - (minus) target fuel pressure is less than -3.5 MPa (-35.69 kgf/cm 2, -507.64 psi) for at least 20 seconds.
Possible Cause
- Low fuel pressure pipe failure (clogged, deformed, coming off)
- High pressure fuel pump failure (low delivery)
- High fuel pressure pipe failure (coming off)
- Injector failure (keeps injecting)
- Fuel rail pressure sensor failure
Confirmation Procedure
Operating Condition
- Start the engine.
- Drive the vehicle repeated acceleration and deceleration.
- When freeze data is stored, drive the vehicle under those conditions instead of Driving Pattern step 2.
- Drive the vehicle in this manner only if the traffic regulations and ambient conditions allow.
Diagnosis Details
Conditions for setting the DTC
When a malfunction is detected, the MIL comes on and a Pending DTC, a Confirmed DTC, the freeze data, and the on-board snapshot are stored in the PCM memory.
Conditions for clearing the DTC
The MIL is cleared if the malfunction does not return in three consecutive trips in which the diagnostic runs. The MIL, the Pending DTC, the Confirmed DTC, the freeze data, and the on-board snapshot can be cleared with the scan tool clear command.
