DTC P0711

DTC P0711:  ATF Temperature Sensor (Range/Performance)

General Description

GHH344053Courtesy of HONDA, U.S.A., INC.
GHH344054Courtesy of HONDA, U.S.A., INC.

The ATF temperature sensor is a thermistor type sensor that changes resistance according to the change in ATF temperature. The powertrain control module (PCM) sends a 5 V reference signal to the sensor through a pull-up resistor. When the ATF temperature is low, the sensor resistance increases and the PCM detects a high signal voltage. As the ATF temperature rises, the sensor resistance decreases and the PCM detects a low signal voltage. If the ATF temperature sensor signal does not change, the PCM detects a malfunction and stores a DTC.

Monitor Execution, Sequence, Duration, DTC Type, OBD Status

Execution Once per driving cycle
Sequence None
Duration 5 minutes or more*
20 seconds or more**
DTC Type Two drive cycles, MIL off, A/T gear position indicator blinks
OBD Status PASSED/FAILED/NOT COMPLETED (STILL TESTING)

* : Stuck at low temperature is detected

** : Stuck at high temperature is detected

Enable Conditions

Stuck at low temperature

Condition Minimum Maximum
Engine coolant temperature
[ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE]
158 deg.F (70 deg.C) -
Initial engine coolant temperature
[ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE]
- 95 deg.F (35 deg.C)
ATF temperature
[ATF TEMPERATURE]
- -4 deg.F (-20 deg.C)
Initial ATF temperature
[ATF TEMPERATURE]
- -4 deg.F (-20 deg.C)
Vehicle speed
[VEHICLE SPEED]
19 mph (30 km/h) -
Battery voltage
[BATTERY VOLTAGE]
11 V -
Throttle position 4 deg. -
No active DTCs set (prevents monitor from running) P0117, P0118, P0712, P0713, P0714, P0721, P0722
Other After the engine coolant temperature [ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE] reaches the fixed value, both the vehicle speed [VEHICLE SPEED] and the throttle position meet the conditions for at least 5 minutes

Stuck at high temperature

Condition Minimum Maximum
Engine coolant temperature
[ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE]
158 deg.F (70 deg.C) -
Previous engine coolant temperature [ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE] when the vehicle condition was turned to the OFF (LOCK) mode 158 deg.F (70 deg.C) -
Previous ATF temperature [ATF TEMPERATURE] when the vehicle condition was turned to the OFF (LOCK) mode 230 deg.F (110 deg.C) -
Present engine coolant temperature [ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE] when the vehicle condition is turned to the ON mode - 95 deg.F (35 deg.C)
Present ATF temperature [ATF TEMPERATURE] when the vehicle condition is turned to the ON mode 230 deg.F (110 deg.C) -
Battery voltage
[BATTERY VOLTAGE]
11 V -
No active DTCs set (prevents monitor from running) P0117, P0118, P0712, P0713, P0714, P0721, P0722

[ ]: HDS Parameter

Malfunction Threshold

Stuck at low temperature

The current ATF temperature [ATF TEMPERATURE] is -4 deg.F (-20 deg.C) or less after Enable Conditions.

Stuck at high temperature

The current ATF temperature [ATF TEMPERATURE] is 230 deg.F (110 deg.C) or more after Enable Conditions.

Possible Cause

NOTE:  The causes shown may not be a complete list of all potential problems, and it is possible that there may be other causes.

Confirmation Procedure

Operating Condition

Stuck at low temperature

Stuck at high temperature

With the HDS

None.

Diagnosis Details

Conditions for setting the DTC

When a malfunction is detected during the first drive cycle, a Pending DTC is stored in the PCM memory. If the malfunction returns in the next (second) drive cycle, a Confirmed DTC and the freeze data are stored. The MIL does not come on.

Conditions for clearing the DTC

The Pending DTC, the Confirmed DTC, and the freeze data can be cleared with the scan tool Clear command or by disconnecting the battery.
