PGM-FI - Overview

Engine Improvement

Two inlet valves and two exhaust valves are located in a pent roof type combustion chamber. In addition, combustion efficiency is improved while higher intake and exhaust efficiency is achieved by the optimization of the engine specifications, including the compression ratio, ignition timing and valve timing. An electronic fuel injection system is adopted for the fuel supply system. The PCM corrects the fuel oil consumption based on the feedback signals from the A/F sensor and secondary O2 sensor, and controls the air fuel ratio.

Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) System

The EGR system reduces oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emissions by recirculating exhaust gas through the EGR pipe and the intake manifold, and into the combustion chambers. Routing the exhaust gas through the EGR pipe helps to prevent carbon deposits from forming in the intake manifold and the throttle body. The PCM memory includes the ideal EGR valve position for varying operating conditions.

Three Way Catalytic Converter (TWC)

The TWC convert hydrocarbons (HC), carbon monoxide (CO), and oxides of nitrogen (NOx) in the exhaust gas to carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen (N2), and water vapor.

Engine Room PCM

For serviceability and weight savings, the wire harness has been shortened, and the PCM has been positioned near the air cleaner in the engine compartment. To ensure correct PCM operation in the engine compartment, the PCM main body and the connectors provide a water-proof function. When inspecting the circuits (like the self-diagnostic check) on the PCM connectors, perform the measurements on the terminal side of the connectors, not on the wire side.
