Coolant Replacement

  1. Start the engine. Set the heater temperature control dial to maximum heat, then turn off the ignition switch. Make sure the engine and radiator are cool to the touch.
  2. Remove the radiator cap.
  3. Loosen the drain plug (A), and drain the coolant.

  4. After the coolant has drained, tighten the radiator drain plug.
  5. Remove the reserve tank, and drain the coolant, then reinstall the reserve tank.
  6. Fill the reserve tank to the MAX mark (A) with Acura Long Life Antifreeze/Coolant Type 2 (P/N OL999-9001).

  7. Pour Acura Long Life Antifreeze/Coolant Type 2 (P/N OL999-9001) into the radiator up to the base of the filler neck.
    NOTE:
    • Always use Acura Long Life Antifreeze/Coolant Type 2 (P/N OL999-9001). Using a non-Acura coolant can result in corrosion, causing the cooling system to malfunction or fail.
    • Acura Long Life Antifreeze/Coolant Type 2 is a mixture of 50 % antifreeze and 50 % water. Do not add water.

    M/T: 

    After Coolant Change: 4.3 L (1.14 US gal) 

    After Engine Overhaul: 6.6 L (1.74 US gal) 

    A/T: 

    After Coolant Change: 4.2 L (1.11 US gal) 

    After Engine Overhaul: 6.5 L (1.72 US gal)

    Engine Coolant Capacities (Including the reserve tank capacity of 0.4 L (0.11 US gal)) 

    After Coolant Change: 4.5 L (1.19 US gal) 

    After Engine Overhaul: 6.8 L (1.80 US gal)

  8. Loosely install the radiator cap.
  9. Start the engine, and let it run until it warms up (the radiator fan comes on at least twice).
  10. Turn off the engine. Check the level in the radiator and add Acura Long Life Antifreeze/Coolant Type 2 if needed.
  11. Put the radiator cap on tightly, then run the engine again, and check for leaks.
  12. Clean up any spilled engine coolant.
  13. If the maintenance minder required engine coolant replacement, reset the maintenance minder (see RESETTING MAINTENANCE INFORMATION DISPLAY ), and this procedure is complete. If the maintenance minder did not require engine coolant replacement, go to step 14.
  14. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
  15. Connect the Honda Diagnostic System (HDS) to the data link connector (DLC) (see step 2 on HOW TO USE THE HDS (HONDA DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM) ).
  16. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
  17. Make sure the HDS communicates with the vehicle and the engine control module (ECM)/powertrain control module (PCM). If it does not communicate, troubleshoot the DLC circuit (see DLC CIRCUIT TROUBLESHOOTING ).
  18. Select GAUGES in the BODY ELECTRICAL menu with the HDS.
  19. Select ADJUSTMENT in the GAUGES with the HDS.
  20. Select SERVICE REMINDER in the ADJUSTMENT menu with the HDS.
  21. Select RESET in the SERVICE REMINDER menu with the HDS. Select MAINTENACE SUB ITEM 5 RESET menu with the HDS.
