Poor Radio Reception Or Interference
NOTE:
Check the radio reception in an open area. Poor reception/interference can be caused by any of these conditions:
- The radio station is far away.
- Atmospheric conditions are unfavorable.
- Tall buildings, mountains, or high-voltage power lines are nearby.
- Do the SEEK STOP TEST
.
Is the test vehicle within 10% of the known-good vehicle?
- YES - Multipath interference or weak station. Operation is normal.
- NO - Go to step 2.
- Check the reception/interference when the rear window defogger is on.
Is the reception poor only with the rear window defogger on?
- YES - Do the rear window defogger function test, and check for a break in the rear window defogger wire (see FUNCTION TEST ).
- NO - Go to step 3.
- Check the reception/interference while the engine is running.
Is there noise (static or whine) only with the engine running?
- YES - Check the antenna and radio grounds. If OK, check the charging system and the ignition system.
- NO - Go to step 4.
- Wrap aluminum foil (A) around the tip of a tester probe (B) as shown.
- Check for continuity by touching one tester probe to the window antenna terminal (A), and move the other tester probe along the antenna wires (for AM reception) or the defogger wire (for FM reception).
Is there continuity in all sections of the antenna?
- YES - Go to step 6.
- NO - Repair the window antenna wire. Go to WINDOW ANTENNA REPAIR , or the defogger wire (see FUNCTION TEST ).
- Disconnect the 1P connector (A), 1P connector (B) and antenna lead (C) from the antenna module (D).
- Turn the radio switch ON, and measure the voltage between the antenna module connector terminal B1 and body ground.
Is there about 12 V?
- Remove the audio-HVAC display module assembly (see AUDIO-HVAC DISPLAY MODULE ASSEMBLY REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ), and disconnect the antenna lead from the audio unit.
- Check for continuity between the antenna lead center pin at the audio unit and the antenna lead center pin at the antenna module.

Is there continuity?
- YES - Go to step 10.
- NO - Replace the antenna lead.
- Check for continuity between the antenna lead center pin at the audio unit and body ground.

Is there continuity?
- YES - Replace the antenna lead.
- NO - Go to step 11.
- Check for continuity between the shield surface of the audio unit lead and the shield surface of the antenna module lead.

Is there continuity?
- YES - Go to step 12.
- NO - Replace the antenna lead.
- Check for continuity between the antenna lead center pin and the surface of the antenna lead.

Is there continuity ?
- YES - Replace the antenna lead.
- NO - Replace the antenna module, and recheck. If the reception is still poor, replace the audio unit.
- Remove the audio-HVAC display module assembly (see AUDIO-HVAC DISPLAY MODULE ASSEMBLY REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ), and disconnect the audio unit connector A (20P).
- Check for continuity between audio unit connector A (20P) terminal No. 1 and the antenna module connector B1 terminal.

Is there continuity?
- YES - Substitute a known-good audio unit and retest.
- NO - Repair an open in the wire between the audio unit and the antenna module.
