SYMPTOM TROUBLESHOOTING INDEX

Symptom Diagnostic Procedure Also check for
OnStar buttons respond normally when pressed, but the OnStar LED indicator is solid or flashing red  
OnStar buttons do not respond when pressed and OnStar LED indicator is solid or flashing red or is solid green Troubleshooting (see ONSTAR BUTTONS DO NOT RESPOND WHEN PRESSED AND ONSTAR LED INDICATOR IS SOLID OR FLASHING RED OR IS SOLID GREEN  )  
No voice response when CALL ANSWER/CALL END button is pressed (system responds with only beep tones) The voice feedback feature is turned OFF. See the owner's manual procedure to turn voice feedback back ON.  
OnStar system states it is dialing out after OnStar Services button is pressed, but only a beeping or carrier error message is heard Troubleshooting (see ONSTAR SYSTEM STATES IT IS DIALING OUT AFTER ONSTAR SERVICES BUTTON IS PRESSED, BUT ONLY A BEEPING OR CARRIER ERROR MESSAGE IS HEARD  ) Poor cellular coverage. Move vehicle to a different location
OnStar reports the MIN, STID and/or ESN is no good or corrupted OnStar reports that the MIN, STID and/or the ESN of the OnStar control unit are reported as no good or corrupted. Replace the OnStar control unit  
OnStar LED blinks green, red, green continually The OnStar unit is in the "Shipping Mode" to put the unit into the "Market Mode" (see TRANSITIONING THE ONSTAR CONTROL UNIT TO MARKET MODE  )  
OnStar telephone repeatedly loses pre-paid phone units (minutes) Verify account usage with the OnStar call center. If usage does not match actual units used over time, replace the OnStar unit Check the battery condition and charging system performance
OnStar Activation Failure message during activation Software download and/or activation failed during an activation session. Call OnStar technical support to analyze problem and reset Poor cellular coverage or activation was attempted while driving. Move vehicle to a different location and activate the system while parked
OnStar system randomly dials calls on its own (radio mutes and a dial or ring tone is heard from audio system) Replace the OnStar control unit, if the system places calls without being initiated by:
  • A button press
  • An air bag deployment
  • The OnStar call center placing a call to the vehicle
Verify with the OnStar call center they are not calling the vehicle or updating software or loading units (minutes) in the control unit
OnStar reports they cannot recognize the vehicle when a call is placed from the vehicle If there are no DTCs present (the LED is green), replace the OnStar control unit  
OnStar reports they cannot find the vehicle location when a call is placed from the vehicle If there are no DTCs present (the LED is green) and the car is outside with a clear view out to the horizon, replace the OnStar control unit
