Removal & Installation: Engine: Removal
NOTE:
- Use fender covers to avoid damaging painted surfaces.
- To avoid damage, unplug the wiring connectors carefully while holding the connector portion.
- Mark all wiring and hoses to avoid misconnection. Also, be sure that they do not contact other wiring or hoses, or interfere with other parts.
- Remove the support struts (A) from the engine hood. Move the hood to a vertical position, then reinstall the support strut. See Fig 1.
- Make sure you have the anti-theft code for the radio, then write down the frequencies for the radio's preset buttons.
- Disconnect the negative cable from the battery first, then the positive cable.
- Remove the battery.
- Remove the intake manifold cover (if applicable). See Fig 2.
- Remove the water bypass hoses (A). See Fig 3. Disconnect the TCS control valve actuator connector (B) and the TCS control valve angle sensor connector (C) from the TCS control valve assembly, then remove the bolt (D) securing the TCS control valve bracket (J32A2 engine).
- Remove the Evaporative Emission (EVAP) canister hose (A) from the throttle body. See Fig 4.
- Remove the vacuum hose (B) and breather pipe (C), then remove the intake air duct (D).
- Remove the harness clamp (A), then remove the battery base (B). See Fig 5.
- Remove the battery base bracket (C).
- Remove the starter cable (A). See Fig 6.
- Remove the ground cable (B) (2002-03 models).

- Remove the throttle cable (A) and cruise control cable (B) by loosening the locknuts (C), then slip the cable ends out of the accelerator linkage. See Fig 7. Take care not to bend the cables when removing them. Always replace any kinked cable with a new one.
- Remove the ground cable (A) and harness clamp (B) (J32A2 engine). See Fig 8.
- Disconnect the engine wire harness connectors (C), and remove the harness clamp (D) on the left side of the engine compartment.
- Relieve fuel pressure. See FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE .
- Remove the fuel feed hose (A) and fuel return hose (B). See Fig 9.
- Remove the brake booster vacuum hose (A) and vacuum hose (B). See Fig 10.
- Remove the engine wire harness clamps. See Fig 11.
- Remove the vacuum hose (A), then disconnect the primary Heated Oxygen Sensor (primary HO2S) connector (B). See Fig 12.
- Remove the battery cables (A) from the under-hood fuse relay box (B). See Fig 13.
- Remove the flange bolt (C), then remove the under-hood fuse relay box.
- Remove the harness clamps (D).
- Disconnect the Engine Control Module (ECM)/Powertrain Control Module (PCM) connectors (A) from the ECM/PCM, and remove the harness clamps (B). See Fig 14.
- Remove the grommet mounting nuts (A), then pull out the engine wire harness. See Fig 15.
- Move the auto-tensioner (A) to remove tension from the alternator belt (B), then remove the alternator belt. See Fig 16.
- Loosen adjusting nut (A), remove the locknut (B) and mounting bolt (C), then remove the power steering (P/S) pump belt (D) and pump without disconnecting the P/S hoses. See Fig 17.
- Remove P/S hose clamp (E).

- Disconnect the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) connector (A) (1999 model). See Fig 18.
- Remove the power steering speed sensor (B). Do not remove the hoses.
- Remove radiator cap.
- Raise the hoist to full height.
- Remove the front tires/wheels.
- Remove the splash shield. See Fig 19.
- Loosen the drain plug in the radiator to drain the engine coolant.
- Drain the Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF). See appropriate SERVICING article in TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSIONS.
- Drain the engine oil. Reinstall the drain bolt using a new washer. See ENGINE OIL under ENGINE OILING.
- Remove exhaust pipe "A". See Fig 20.
- Remove the damper forks. See appropriate FRONT article in SUSPENSION.
- Disconnect the suspension lower arm ball joints. See appropriate FRONT article in SUSPENSION.
- Remove the axle shafts. See appropriate AXLE SHAFTS article in DRIVELINE/AXLES. Coat all precision finished surfaces with clean engine oil. Tie plastic bags over the driveshaft ends.
- Remove the bolts (A) securing the shift cable holder (B), then remove the shift cable cover (C). See Fig 21. To prevent damage to the control lever joint, be sure to remove the bolts securing the shift cable holder before removing the bolts securing the shift cable cover.
- Remove the lock bolt (D) securing the control lever (E), then remove the shift cable (F) with the control lever. Take care not to bend the shift cable while removing it.
- Unplug the P/S hose clamps (A), and disconnect the engine mount control vacuum hose (B). See Fig 22.
- Lower the hoist, then remove the upper radiator hose (A), and the lower radiator hose (B). See Fig 23.
- Remove heater hoses. See Fig 24.
- Remove the ATF cooler hoses (A), then plug the ATF cooler hoses and lines (1999 model). See Fig 25.
- Remove the ground cable (B).
- Remove the P/S hose clamp from the rear beam. See Fig 26.
- Attach the chain hoist to the engine. See Fig 27.
- Remove the side engine mount bracket. See Fig 28.
- Remove the rear mount bracket support nut (A) and mounting bolt (B). See Fig 29.
