Cruise Control Systems: Description

WARNING: Deactivate air bag system before performing any service operation. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM in RESTRAINTS. DO NOT apply electrical power to any component on steering column without first deactivating air bag system. Air bag may deploy.

The cruise control system uses mechanically and electrically operated devices to maintain vehicle speed settings greater than 25 MPH. The cruise control unit receives command signals from cruise control main switch and cruise control SET/RESUME/CANCEL switch. It also receives operating signals from brake switch, Powertrain Control Module (PCM), and gear position switch (A/T).

The cruise control unit compares actual vehicle speed to vehicle speed setting and adjusts throttle to maintain set speed. When brake pedal is pressed, the brake switch releases system control of throttle. When clutch is disengaged, the clutch switch sends a disengage signal to the cruise control unit.
