Block & Piston Inspection

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Acura MDX and 2001 Acura MDX. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Check piston for distortion or cracks. Measure piston diameter perpendicular to pin bore and .63" (16.0 mm) from bottom of piston skirt. See PISTONS, PINS & RINGS  table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS.
  2. Measure wear and taper of cylinder bores. Measure in axial direction and perpendicular to axial direction. If measurements in any cylinder exceeds oversize bore service limit, replace cylinder block. See CYLINDER BLOCK  table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS.
  3. Hone scored or scratched cylinder bores. Using straightedge, check top of cylinder block for warpage. Measure diagonally and straight along bolt hole mating surfaces.
  4. Calculate difference between cylinder bore diameter and piston diameter to determine piston-to-block clearance. If clearance exceeds service limit, select proper size oversize piston, and recheck clearance. See PISTONS, PINS & RINGS  table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS.
