Except 3.5RL

Check starter solenoid for continuity between terminal "S" and armature housing (ground). See Fig 1 and Fig 2 . Check continuity between terminals "S" and "M". Continuity should be present. If continuity is not present, replace starter solenoid. If continuity is present, check for burning, pitting or other defects at contact points and face of starter solenoid plunger. Clean starter solenoid plunger surface, and polish with emery cloth or No. 500-600 sandpaper.
