Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS)
NOTE:
This test can also be used as a symptom test if speedometer, trip meter, and odometer are inoperative.
- Check fuse No. 15 (7.5-amp) in underdash fuse/relay box. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect 3-pin connector from VSS. VSS is located on transaxle. Install Test Harness (07LAJ-PT3020A) to engine wire harness only. Connect DVOM positive probe to Red test harness clip and negative probe to ground. See Fig 1 . If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, check for open in Black wire between VSS and ground connector G101. Ground connector G101 is located at right side of engine, on upper radiator hose housing, next to radiator fan switch. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
- Connect positive lead of DVOM to White test harness clip and negative DVOM lead to Red test harness clip. Turn ignition switch to ON position. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, check for open in Black/Yellow wire between VSS and fuse No. 15.
- Connect DVOM positive lead to Green test harness clip. Connect DVOM negative lead to Red test harness clip. Turn ignition switch to ON position. If 5 or more volts exists, go to next step. If 5 volts does not exist, repair open in circuit between VSS and PCM.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Connect test harness connector to VSS. Raise and support vehicle. Place transmission in neutral and turn ignition switch to ON position. Rotate one front wheel while other front wheel is kept from rotating. If DVOM reading varies between zero volts and 5 volts or greater, go to next step. If DVOM reading does not vary between zero volts and 5 volts or greater, replace VSS. See VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR (VSS) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
- Disconnect 16-pin connector "B" from instrument cluster. Using DVOM, measure voltage between ground and 16-pin instrument cluster connector "B" terminal No. 6 (Orange wire). See Fig 2 . Rotate one front wheel while other front wheel is kept from rotating. If DVOM reading varies between zero volts and 5 volts or greater, replace speedometer. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If DVOM reading does not vary between zero volts and 5 volts or greater, repair open in circuit between VSS and instrument cluster 16-pin connector "B".
