Engine Removal/Installation: Removal
WARNING:
- Make sure jacks and safety stands are placed properly and hoist brackets are attached to the correct positions on the engine.
- Make sure the vehicle will not roll off stands and fall while you are working under it.
CAUTION:
- Use fender covers to avoid damaging painted surface.
- Unspecified items are common.
- To avoid damage, unplug the wiring connectors carefully while holding the connector portion.
- Mark all wiring and hoses to avoid misconnection. Also, be sure that they do not contact other wiring or hoses or interfere with other parts.
- Secure the hood open as far as possible.
- Make sure you have the anti-theft code for the radio, then write down the frequencies for the radio's preset buttons.
- Disconnect the battery negative terminal first, then the positive terminal.
- Disconnect the battery cables from the under-hood fuse/relay box and battery positive terminal.
- Remove the battery and battery base.
- Disconnect the connectors from the ECM/PCM.
- Disconnect the main wire harness connector.
- Disconnect the intake air temperature (IAT) sensor connector, then remove the intake air duct and air cleaner housing.
- Disconnect the engine wire harness connectors on the left side engine compartment.
- Relieve fuel pressure (see RELIEVING
).WARNING: Do not smoke while working on the fuel system. Keep open flame or spark away from the work area. Drain fuel only Into an approved container.
- Remove the evaporative emission (EVAP) control canister hose and fuel feed hose.
- Remove the brake booster vacuum hose, fuel return hose and vacuum hose.
- Remove the throttle cable by loosening the locknut, then slip the cable end out of the accelerator linkage.NOTE:
- Take care not to bend the cable when removing it. Always replace any kinked cable with a new one.
- Adjust the throttle cable when installing (see INSPECTION/ADJUSTMENT ).
- Remove the grommet and wire harness clamps, then pull out the ECM/PCM connectors.
- Remove the mounting bolt and lock bolt, then remove the power steering (P/S) pump belt and pump.NOTE: Do not disconnect the P/S hoses.
- Loosen the idler pulley center nut and adjusting bolt, then remove the air conditioning (A/C) compressor belt.
- Remove the transmission ground cable and hose clamp.
- Remove the clutch slave cylinder and line/hose assembly (M/T).
- Remove the radiator cap.WARNING: Use care when removing the radiator cap to avoid scalding by hot coolant or steam.
- Raise the hoist to full height.
- Remove the front tires/wheels and splash shield.
- Drain the engine coolant (see
ENGINE COOLANT REFILLING AND BLEEDING
).
- Loosen the drain plug in the radiator.
- Drain the transmission oil or fluid. Reinstall the drain plug using a new washer (see TRANSMISSION OIL , CHECKING/CHANGING ).
- Drain the engine oil. Reinstall the drain bolt using a new washer (see ENGINE OIL ).
- Remove the shift rod and extension rod (M/T).
- Remove the A/C compressor.NOTE: Do not disconnect the A/C hoses.
- Remove the shift cable (A/T).NOTE:
- Take care not to bend the cable when removing it. Always replace any kinked cable with new one.
- Adjust the shift cable when installing (see ADJUSTMENT ).
- Remove exhaust pipe A.
- Remove the damper forks (see REMOVAL ).
- Disconnect the suspension lower arm ball joints (see KNUCKLE/HUB REPLACEMENT ).
- Remove the driveshafts.CAUTION:
- Do not pull on the driveshaft, the CV joint may come apart.
- Use care when prying out the assembly. Pull it straight to avoid damaging the differential oil seal or intermediate shaft dust seal.
NOTE: Coat all precision-finished surfaces with clean engine oil. Tie plastic bags over the driveshaft ends. - Lower the hoist.
- Remove the upper and lower radiator hoses and heater hoses.
- Remove the ATF cooler hoses, then plug the ATF cooler hoses and pipes (A/T).
- Attach the chain hoist to the engine.
- Remove the left and right front mount and bracket.
- Remove the rear mount bracket.
- Remove the upper bracket.
- Remove the transmission mount bracket, then remove the transmission mount.
- Check that the engine/transmission is completely free of vacuum hoses, fuel and coolant hoses and electrical wiring.
- Slowly raise the engine approximately 150 mm (6 in). Check once again that all hoses and wires are disconnected from the engine/transmission.
- Raise the engine all the way, and remove it from the vehicle.
