REPAIR PROCEDURE

  1. Make sure you have the anti-theft code for audio unit, then write down your customer's radio station presets.
  2. Disconnect battery negative cable and battery positive cable; then wait at least 3 minutes to allow SRS control unit to discharge.
  3. Remove access panel (Fig 1 ) from steering wheel (two screws).

  4. Unplug cable reel 2P connector from driver's airbag 2P connector.
NOTE: When unplugged, driver's airbag 2P connector is automatically shorted.
  5. Make sure front wheels are aligned straight ahead.
  6. Remove coin pocket. See (Fig 2 ). Then remove dashboard lower cover (one screw and seven clips). Remove knee bolster (four bolts).

  14. Use a small, flat-tip screwdriver to lightly dimple shield in eight places. See (Fig 7 ).
NOTE: Do not press too hard with screwdriver when dimpling shield. Excessive pressure can cause too much deformation of the shield, resulting in high rotation torque of steering column, requiring steering column replacement.

  15. Reinstall the combination switch assembly, and secure it with three screws.
  16. Position cancel sleeve on combination switch assembly so that projections on the sleeve are aligned vertically. See (Fig 8 ).

  19. Reinstall upper and lower steering column covers, and secure them with five screws.
  20. If needed, center cable reel by first rotating reel clockwise until it stops, then rotating it counterclockwise (approximately two and a half turns) until the arrow mark on reel label points straight up.
  21. Reinstall steering wheel, and then plug in connectors for the remote audio and cruise control set/resume/cancel switches.
  22. Reinstall steering wheel bolt. Torque bolt to 38 N m (28 lb-ft).
  23. Reinstall driver's airbag, and secure it with new Torx bolts. Use a Torx T30 bit to torque the bolts to 9.8 N m (7.2 lb-ft)
  24. Reinstall knee bolster. Torque bolts to 9.8 N m (7.2 lb-ft). Reinstall dashboard lower cover and coin pocket.
  25. Plug driver's airbag 2P connector into cable reel 2P connector.
  26. Reinstall access panel.
  27. Reconnect battery positive cable, and then reconnect battery negative cable.
